Canna ~2013~

I have read of people wrapping the rootball in newspaper (and changing it as it becomes damp) to draw the water out of the rootball as a precursor to winterising ... but hopefully that once-in-a-lifetime record wet Summer won't occur again for a
while!

 

Here's my Cannas on my warm windowsill, son to be hardened off and moved into the greenhouse;

These are the ones that were lagging behind, they're still much shorter but looking very healthy otherwise apart from the contorted little runt


Here are the larger ones, very pleased with this bunch this year

 

I'd look after the contorted little runt.
It could be slow but at the same time could end up a very interesting plant.

One of the first things I learnt about growing mixed seeds was the slower ones are always the more desirable colours when they get to flowering size.

Just a thought, dont dump it.

Absolutely Pete, it won't be getting dumped , its a quirky little fellow, what you can't see in the photo is a strange growth under one of the leaves that looks like a mouse's tail!!!

 

I have a russian red that is similar bilbo
All mine looks scruffy compared to yours,i couldnt afford 65 new pots and wasnt polishing any pots up non are as tall either apart from the australis that i bought from jacksdale nursery last week
Hoping for a bit of sunshine so i can give the gh a good clean plus take the bubblewrap down

Hi mine are about 10" now. Just hope they flower well this year. Last years did very poorly. Hardly any flowered. I have brought some hedychiums, Assam orange to try. They have only just been potted up so am hoping that in the warmth of the conservatory they will grow quickly. If they do well this year and the cannas don't, then I might just grow more more of them.

 

My Cannas are really going for it now and will be hardened off and popped in the greenhouse this week (hopefully ), I was planning to do it last week but the weather cooled again. The largest one is a Canna 'grand pink' standing 34-35 inches tall, the others I'm growing are 'grand orange', brasiliensis, russian red, musifolia, paniculata, speciosa, limbata, tenerife and an orange/red hybrid.

Most of them are also suckering well now too

Hi Joolz, when I potted them up I put some Osmocote slow release plant food in the compost along with a small amount of chicken manure pellet. They're also getting occasionaly misting with a diluted liquid seaweed feed..

 

Hiya folks.

My five Canna's that are around 1ft tall are now in their final pots. I'm now starting the process of hardening them off. I'm thinking that they can stay outside in the next couple of weeks?

 

Early June is the usual time for me to put mine out also Freddy but with the weather we've had recently you just don't know whats coming next!!, one would hope that things should be getting more consistantly warmer soon I think they'll be fine in a couple of weeks, just keep an eye on the good old weather forecast for cold nights - just in case

 

Bit the bullet today and planted some of mine out into the beds
Them seemed to be sulking in there pots, they are about 9inchs tall and sending suckers up.
I've still got half in the GH to plant soon

 

Most of mine seem to be thickening out & getting suckers but not gaining much height ive still got some 4inch tall !
I might pop some out from the greenhouse for fresh air tomo
Are they slug proof ?? x
