not impressed with the flower , but the leaves are stunning smerald green and blue/purple ends .......what I really like about this canna is that is self cleaning , one of the virus free variety and the only canna that didn`t get damaged from the hail

I'm eagerly waiting for yet another of my Cannas to flower, C.grand pink is standing almost 6ft tall and is producing a nice big fat bud, can't wait :dancy:

I am also pleased with my only surviving piece of C.altensteinii rhizome that I overwintered, it was only a small piece with one shoot but it now stands over 6ft tall and has produced several suckers :)

Suckers come up mixed, green or purple. They don't colour later IME. It may be prudent to remove the plain ones, but I leave some as they add contrast - some green, some purple, some chimera. Important not to let the plant fully revert, over time.

I propagated a totally dark leaved sucker from it last year.
No sign of any green appearing on it this year, so I would say, only propagate from shoots showing green and dark markings.

My Cannas are very slow this year, not sure why.

Thanks guys :), I'll keep an eye on it then..would you suggest removing the green ones before it goes in to dormancy in the autumn or sooner??

Not really, I only start to divide in spring once the rhisomes have started to shoot, at that point you can see the colouring.

You can split them in the spring Nick, cut the tubers leaving at least a couple of growing points per portion.

Popped to another town today and found a cracking plant seller on the high street, he had loads of cannas, all looked stunning and healthy, he had pretoria, cleopatra and others and they were all multi stemmed plants, around 4-5ft tall and just flowering for £5.99. I was sorely tempted but I resisted temptation............... for now anyway :snork:

Our local florist has just got a load of Cannas in that are just starting to flower, good healthy plants for £5.99, however one has to have a little chuckle when he's got them for sale as Pretoria Callas!!! when they were obviously Cannas and he had several varieties including pretoria, durban, cleopatra & austrailia :) I had a word with the guy that runs it whom I've got to know quite well and he was quite pleased I pointed it out and went and changed his sign to 'various Cannas' :)
