P.S. Down South can probably be done early than 1st week of June, Up North maybe later, coastal regions probably earlier.

    Anyone growing Water Cannas?

As I understood it any?? Canna was happy growing in water, but on my internet travels I turned up Canna glauca which is known as the "Water Canna". I presume they can be grown from seed, but what I read is that they grow to 90cm-1.50m whereas named varieties are 2.0-2.5m tall - which sounds quite impressive!

    Hart Canna have 4 varieties
    http://www.hartcanna.co.uk/catalogue.html#water

I was original attracted to them by a Forum post by someone who had purchased one from Urban Jungle, which turns out to have been for Canna Taney which the O/P described as "Superb" - allt he encouragement I needed!!!
    http://www.urbanjungle.uk.com/product.asp?productid=349

but on looking at Hart's site that is a Pinky-Orange shade
    [IMG]
(Claines Canna site often has the RHS Colour Code ID ... but sadly not for this variety)
    http://clainescanna.co.uk/canna-taney/

not sure that's the colour I want ... we do have some bog standard water Iris "flags" in the pond, so they are yellow - so maybe Canna glauca 'Ra'?

But I do fancy the red Canna glauca 'Endeavour' :)

typically Out of Stock :( and not sure I want to pay the postage charge for just one plant ... Mind you, Hart Canna is near @JWK I think? So perhaps I'll go an scrounge a cuppa off him, and then I can justify driving all the way there, instead of paying a couple of quid postage? :heehee:

I grew glauca from seed a couple of years ago, got to impressive sturdy 5ft plants in large pots and nice yellow flowers. Lost them in the winter though, a different root system with these too, no visible large rhizome just a tangle of fleshy roots, a bit more like a dahlia! :)

I've grown some ordinary cannas in my pond, its a bit trial and error but I think most like the extra water, you need to wait until quite late before immersing them though as with ponds they take a while to warm up.
They soon catch up though, due to the fact they never need watering.
            And the fish fertilize them.

Well looked at the weather forecast for the next 10 days and planted 3 cannas out yesterday  Everything will be fine as these are North Western , rugby league playing ,pie eating Cannas , not your southern softy Cannas ! Actually my garden is quite sheltered from prevailing winds, so everything will be cosy.

Finally gotten around to clearing the last of the overwintering plants out from the greenhouse - some of last years Cannas had got rather root bound in their pots so I submitted them to some rather brutal surgery with an old bread knife & I now have three plants where there used to be one... hopefully they will be OK, its not exactly warm or sunny here today.

I promised a picture of the parents of the odd white seedling that Joolz has - I think it was one of these:

Quite a lot of variations in the leaves on those, I dont remember them being that pronounced last year but I guess that they must have been.
