If you want to buy plants this year then I would recommend Hart Canna , they are £10 each plus pp. If you are after them for next year then it's much cheaper growing from seed, Musafolia grande grows very fast and would make a good sized plant within one season from seed - but it's a bit late for this year.

Jungle Plants also has Musafoia grande - more expensive than Hart, but Ive had a number of plants from Jungle over the last couple of years & they have always been good. Note that some of their other Cannas are on sale at the moment.

That is probably a better deal than Hart's because Jungle Plants is a 3 litre pot whereas Hart is selling them "as small plants. At a minimum this means an actively growing rhizome with roots and at least 1 actively growing shoot."

This one is easy from seed (no help for this year though)

P.S. A clump of 3 or 5 or so looks a lot more dramatic than "one".

P.P.S. You could buy some cheap Ensete (E. maurellii I suppose). They will grow similarly large leaves (to C. musafolia grande), although perhaps not quite as tall in a single season. You can overwinter them in a frost free conservatory, but you might be able to buy them cheap locally - i.e. just use them as bedding.

I live in a hot climate and we get a canna worm which cuts and then rolls back a strip of leaf to make a home. They just do cannas and make a mess of them unless you spray. The problem is the ones growing in my pond. The worms loved the conditions of those, warm winter in the water, the cannas die completely back but the worm seems to be able to overwinter anyway. The problem is I did not want to spray the ones in water so they got devastated.

Do you get these worms in England? I used Spectracide Triazicide Insect killer, first time using it, I used to use carbaryl but thought I would step it up a notch. Seems to work well. I only spray my ornamentals and fruit before it flowers.

Canna altensteinii is another with large leaves and I have got it to 10-11ft in a single season from seed, producing a huge clump :)

I've got half a dozen dear little canna seedlings that I've raised from some seed distribution stuff. They look so cute with the water droplets on their tiny leaves! The seeds were years old and I didn't soak or file them, but they've germinated readily enough.

What can I expect from them? Will they flower this year? Any predominant colour to be expected from mixed, presumably open-pollinated seed? Will they be virus-free?

Its quite late for a "seedling" ... if you keep them in, pot them on, for a bit - so that they get a wiggle on ... then "maybe" - a good Summer will help of course :)

My money is on red :)

It would be a first if they aren't ... definitely no need to worry on that score.

Joolz got to agree with you about snails, its by far the worst year I can remember for them, there's hundreds of the little blighters, they're nibbling things they wouldn't normally bother with too!!!

However I have to say my army of frogs and hedgehogs are keeping the slug population down, not seen so many of them :)
