No special treatment Joolz , just stick the rhizome in a bucket full of MPC first week in March , and off they go. The C Bengal-Tiger are a lot slower growing , not quite half the size.
I'll move them out to the GH this weekend , and keep a close eye on the 2 day forecast as usual

My C. Tropicals from large rhizomes are now nearly 3ft tall - as shown in the post below . Now I need one more Canna for a friend . Would it be safe to unpot the largest one split it carefully with a saw and repot two ? Is it safe to do it at this stage , am I likely to end up with two healthy Cannas or two dead ones ?
      TIA

The one you sent me, I split it into five bits and they are all growing now :dbgrtmb:

I've done this on cannas slightly smaller than yours and got away with it.

Thanks Mowgley , John . I lifted the Canna out of the bucket ,and with a small hand saw cut the rhizome in half, only took 2 or 3 strokes . Repotted them without much root disturbance . I now have two nice Canna plants with about 6 stems on each :blue thumb: ( Well they have survived 24 hours so far ! )

Due to the virus , I have a policy where I give cannas away every spring , but would not buy one in - just in case.
Has anyone on GC ever lost cannas due to the virus ? How bad was it , how do you recover your stock ?

In my first year of growing them I bought some from Homebase that were already infected without realising. I also grew some from seed and it wasn't until the following year when I read on this forum how to identify the virus and decided to chuck out the Homebase ones. They were the Tropicanna variegated leaf types and I just thought the yellow stripes were supposed to be there. The virus never spread to my home grown ones, they are emerging this spring with no sign of virus so maybe I was lucky.

I've never grown Cannas before but after reading this thread thought I'd have a go...I got the tubers from Morrisons..2 for £1.50...The President...knowing nothing about Cannas apart from how fabulous they look...this isn't 'the virus' is it?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news @Lolimac :cry3: but to me it looks like it.
Looking at pics of the plant on google the leaves should be a solid green with no variegation!

Prepare for immediate evac, take off and nuke the whole site from orbit.

It's the only way to be sure.
