I've never got Cannas to flower till August before, despite twice weekly doses of tomatoe feed. Hence my surprise when this monster flowered in June, and without a period of dormancy over the winter as well. Keep checking daily and give them a good talking too.

Now that is the colour of Canna that I remember Portugal for. Georgeous aren't they. Do yours have spiders with a body like a black grape in them too? :D :D I'm 50Km south of Alicante, just south of Torrevieja, Southend on Steroids, which is two days drive away from Portugal. I work in the UK and "live" in Spain for only 7 or 8 weeks a year, in week sized chunks. So the garden there has to look after itself most of the time. If we get complaints that the Ipomea has got across the street again, then we go for a quickie long weekend and prune it.

Hi, Nik! Just been out to look and I'm afraid the onslaught of heat has done the beauties in so I can't see if there were any spidery critters in there! [IMG] However, I have noticed that the first one that bloomed has spikey little seed pods which I shall retrieve: now or wait a wee bit?

The first few years we had two trips a year, driving so only 10 days each visit actually here working on things, getting the "infrastructure" in. In 2001/02 we came for 7 months / 5 UK; 2002/03 8 /4; 2003/04 9 / 3 and I haven't been back since! [IMG] T'other half went back for a month last year to get a vanload of things from our apartment on the IoW and we're both going back for five days (driving) in October to clear the rest out! :D

Picking back up on this thread, I planned on digging up my Cannas and moving them in a month of two because as you can see above they are a bit cramped where they are.

When I looked at them yesterday, there are two of them that are sending up flower shoots again!

There's the trellis fence on the one side and a well-established Poinsettia and Lantana hedge on the other.

Does anyone know if it's safe to uproot them?

Up rooting the flowering canna you won't kill it but the flower will likely flop if you repot it.

Best leave it till it slows up, unless you are desperate to move it.

The Canna Musifolia grew 9 more stalks during the summer, some over 9 feet tall. It has only just squeezed into the outhouse. I'll have to divide it in the spring.
The Strelitzea Nicolai has grown too big for the greenhouse, and is in the outhouse too.

BM, seeing your superb banana trees inspired me to get one this year. It has fattened up very nicely, from a £2.99 seedling, and will try and overwinter it in the greenhouse.
