Cannas 2015

Forgive me @OxfordNick , but I was under the impression that "durban" was what we used to call "Tropicana".
As I remember it, it had red striped leaves.

 

Mine was labelled tropicana when I bought it. I knew nothing about canna virus then so not sure if it's ok or not.

 

I dont have any photos of that from last year but I dont think there was much striping on the leaves - I got it from Jungle plants & it still had the original label in the pot so I dont think Ive mixed it up with anything else. I will keep an eye on it.

 

Well, I know the light levels make a lot of difference regarding leaf colouring, but yours looks fine to me Charlie.
I dont really like google images, but if you look its got stripey leaves.

Last summer was the first year I had planted my Cannas out.
Usually leave them in the pots.

Dug them up in Oct. The rhizomes disintegrated into a whole lot of small bits.
Put them in some boxes and into the garage.
Forgot comepletely about them until last night when I was rumaging around for something else and found them!

Took some bigish pots that would fit all the bits in, a shallow layer of potting soil, the rhizomes, and then more soil.
Put them outside in the rain last night.
Hopefully they won't take too long to get going. A few were already showing signs of life.

 

The ones I left in the ground still aren't showing. This time last year they were about 5 inch heigh.
Had a feel around the rhizomes and they still feel firm. The ones in the GH growing slowly

Canna brasiliensis from seed this year is blooming at just 25cm height!!!


It is horse shino, some sand and some grit.

So is it a naturally small species?

 

The ones I've grown usually flower around 2-3ft.
Left them in the ground last winter and came back well, this year only a small shoots showing
