Cannas 2015

I wonder if it's the horse shino that has forced them to flower so early?

 

Checked on these last night.
There isn't much growth a month later.....

Is it because I started them so late?

 

More likely because there hasn't been that much warmth. Mine were in the greenhouse up until ten days ago.

 

Mine are miles behind last year, I keep thinking give them time but it's the middle of June

Me too. That's why they had to go out.

 

The Gardeners Club has Cannas relatively cheap.
£5 for a decent sized pot. Same price as a tray or two of annuals.

Might be worth buying new ones from them and binning at the end of the season.
Can't be bothered with this faffing and not having a decent display

 

As Canna are not part of the main focus of your growing interests then maybe the risk of virus is not such a problem. I certainly see the logic.

 

Yup, I just want one or two (I like the bronze leaved varieties) for the dramatic effect.
Not quite getting that with mine which are barely 15cm at the moment.

Out of interest, are a lot of Cannas available in general garden centres infected?

 

The general consensus appears to be that you assume that they are infected. The probability of them being infected is quite high especially amongst the large chains.

 

Mine came from a big chain.
Have had them for 2 years. So far they aren't showing obvious signs.
Aside from stunted growth - more my fault than anything else.

 

My musafolia growing in a pot it has another few stems coming up so should fill out a bit really happy with it

 

My 'Flaccida'...

As you can see, two of the plants are lagging behind/stunted. There are though some shoots coming up, so hopefully they'll get away. If you look closely you will see what I believe to be rust on one or two of the lower leaves. This has been there for quite some time. I removed the worst affected leaves some time ago, and doesn't seem to be spreading. I've had a couple of greenfly attacks, but are clear now.

 

As in the Water Canna?
