The Cannas sown on 1/1/15 are now being potted up into 80 x 80mm pots, before and after pic:

Ah, that's the one you said you didn't like much.
      Thanks, I'd appreciate that.

I'm a bit worried about my canna tropicana. I bought it late last summer and kept it in the shed and now my greenhouse. It's been kept slightly damp (not bone dry) and the top growth all died back. I repotted it last weekend in fresh compost and the roots were still fleshy I think, but remaining stem was very dead looking. When will it start to regrow, or is it a goner?
I tried to keep it totally frost free but our shed leaked, causing the sad demise of a few favourite plants. I don't think water got in the pot though like my pelargoniums.

Patience! I believe that the soil needs to warm up to about 20°c before growth starts again. I bought one of my smaller ones indoors last week and it sent a shoot up on Sunday.

It is now under my grow lights.

I had the same problem too. The leak cut the electric out for the greenhouse heater.

That sounds quite normal so nothing to worry about, it's what Cannas do over-winter. It may take till May for them to start regrowing.

Charlie , as Longk stated . I repot all my stored Canna rhizomes mid to late March , using the infamous £1 buckets . Bring them into the house , under the stern gaze of Mrs H  I find that as soon as they have a bit off heat , I will see growth in one too three weeks . Move them back out to the GH towards the end of April.

I became over excited when I saw this canna discussion, I have never heard of them before, so sent off to Portugal for some seeds, which have now arrived. I shall follow all your instructions to the letter! I am most impressed with the packaging of the seeds though! image.jpg

Does anyone have a recommendation for where to get seeds?

My first attempt at using the 'baggy' method of seed germination, 25% germinated after 4 days. They're old seeds and I've been getting low germination rates using seed compost so it will be interesting to compare these to the other half of the batch that were pot sown.

EDIT: The 25% was yesterday (when pic below was taken), I've just had another look and today after 5 days it's up to 40%.

I suppose an advantage of this method is that you can monitor germination and react to failures much quicker than waiting and waiting for pot sown stuff to show before realising you need to get some more seeds in.

                        Hiya folks :)
Does anyone know of a source for virus-free rhizomes/plants?

Freddy , I don't think you can get a 100% guarantee on rhizomes . The only place I know is Hart Cannas . I bought some 2 years ago without a problem .

                          Thanks for that Harry.
I would grow from seed, as I have done before. It seems apparent though that seed grown will only produce small flowers. Maybe I'm wrong?
