I love the Canna "Trumpet" shape when growing from seed .
My Canna season started today . I uncovered half my stored rhizomes from the garage. One had 2 green shoots about 6" tall plus quite a few other signs off growth . I replenished my stock of £1 buckets at B and Q today , so will be splitting the rhizomes and potting up next week :dbgrtmb:

My cannas have owner wintered in my pots just nicely, so have sprinkled fish, blood and bone in them and massaged it in. The rhizomes are huge, so I'm expecting big things from them this year.
Also, I've bought some Russian reds and a few wyomings as rhizomes from my gc, they have been planted up in my windowsill, but will keep an eye on the leaves to see if they may be virused as it was taking a chance... Fingers crossed they'll be ok, if not they are in the bin.

I took some seeds from my cannas that flowered last year, chitted them and planted them last October and they have grown to a decent size, so gave them to a friends wife for her garden. Be interesting to see the babies when I visit.

Filed, soaked and in poly bags, they are now developing little white roots - this has taken 7 days.

For the past few years I unpack my stored rhizomes , plant them in buckets or large pots . I then bring them into the house for warmth and light . Obviously allowable house space is at a premium ! Generally the growing Cannas are then moved out to the GH in the back half of April.
Question - I have two Cannas in large terracotta pots . If I repot them with fresh MPC would they be OK in a cold green house . I do put a heater on if temp is forecast below 5°c . I have noticed that the stored tubers do sprout in store , in a cold dark garage!

            TIA

I'm unsure about this Harry, in a cold greenhouse they may rot - I've tried this in the past and fresh MPC doesn't seem to encourage growth - it's warmth they need as far as I know.

I'm going to repot some of mine this weekend (time permitting) as an experiment, that's in my heated greenhouse though, kept to 5C min.

All the cannas I grew from seed last year I left in the ground to overwinter - we'll see if they survived soon enough. this year I've finally got round to sowing the seeds acquired from wisley, not sure on variety but its one of the ones they have in front of the waterfall in the greenhouse!

I dug up the Musa grande I left in the ground expecting them to be all mush, but they look very healthy so I've potted them up and moved into the heated greenhouse. I was going to discard them as I'm growing new ones from seed this year, I just can't bring myself to throw them out.

The ones over-wintering in my greenhouse are on the move, some fresh shoots appearing so I'll put off re-potting until they get a bit bigger, the new shoots are easy to damage.

My Durban/tropicana has about 4 shoots up now, the largest is into its second leaf.
Plants from seed are a couple of inches tall at most. Will pot them on and move to the greenhouse in a month or so I guess.

Two are up, so that's 10 days. On the face of it then, the 'baggy' method is quicker. It remains to be seen how many of mine will germinate.

Well, 5 out of 6 germinated, so not too bad. The thing I'm not sure about is aftercare. Thing is, although the plants are sound, they're not getting away like they should. My current regime is to keep them in my heated propagator at night, and outside (not in the greenhouse) during the day, as long as it's warm. Is there something I should be doing?

Mine are in the greenhouse all the time Freddy, just kept frost free, I'm not sure either if it's the right thing to do but they seem to be doing OK.

I am now sat in a rather small home office surrounded by 9 Cannas in £1 buckets . I have another 5 secreted in the spare bedroom , which move into the rather small home office if the GKs or family stay over. Probably late next week I move them out to the GH . A couple of weeks later I move them to a sheltered spot behind the shed to harden off . I plant them out around middle of May.
