I thought as much. Would a nice looking ceramic pot work?

The only difference being that a ceramic pot would be waterproof.......but it would be vulnerable:dunno::snork: to frosts and the water expanding and cracking it when it froze.

Love your water lily. I've had mine in a half barrel for the past 2 years but although plenty of leaves I've had no flowers! Do you feed your lilies?

I"m so jealous! There are still no sign of any buds appearing on mine. Think my fingers are more rust than green!

I think spring is best as it gives the lilies etc a bit of growing time to settle in.
I had a large 1/2 barrel with goldfish and water lilies. The main problem was overwintering, in the last really cold winter I wrapped it round with fleece and a folded tarpaulin, otherwise I think the whole thing would have frozen. Water snails are a good idea too especially for the fish. I found the ones with a little trap to be the longest lived.
Sometimes Waterlilies can take a year or so to decide to flower. I had a white/ cream one which I had quite given up on, but it flowered in it's 3rd year, so have patience!

Hi all, this is my first post here after stalking this thread and skimming ideas. I thought I'd post a pic of my first ever bucket pond (an inquisitive toddler meant I'm not allowed a 'proper' pond). It's about 2 months old and gets about 80% sun throughout the day.

I've added Veronica becabunga, a dash of duckweed, some hornwort, some milfoil and some frogbit, water soldier and something that I think is spearwort (some sort of Ranunculus...?). A mix of ebay and stuff I could beg/borrow/steal.

it's slowly beginning to settle into it's stride and we've already plenty of midge larvae, some stowaway snails, some zooplankton and (my pride & joy) a real live caddis larva! :)

I'm hoping to put some combination of overhanging plants, either in the bucket or suspended by hooks on the outside (any tips/ideas???).

anyways, just thought I'd post to say hi and thanks to bilbo and others for helping to guide me :)

Why have just any old pond, when you can have a DUCK pond! Get some ducks in there.

                  Hello All

I've just filled up my two Belfast sinks (pictures soon) after using aquarium sealant and bath plugs to seal them up. Quick question, does anyone know of any pond plants that do well in shade? I'm going to parents house tonight to pick up some duckweed, oxygenating plants and hopefully some pondlife. I don't think miniature water lilies will be happy will they?

                  Ta!

@nFrost water lilies need sunshine, that is when they open their gorgeous blooms. Well, the ones I had in my pond at the last house did anyway. As soon as the sun passed they would close up again. Is the set up going to be in shade all day long or will it get sunshine for a generous part of the day? You may find it won't meet your expectations if it is in constant shade. Also, you may wish to wait a few more weeks before planting up so that the water gets a chance to warm up a bit.

Really looking forward to seeing the pictures.
