Slugbug...you've brought back so many memories, not least seeing the Bay City Rollers at Newcastle City Hall, 15th Septembert 1975, it was a Wednesday - and yes, I am that sad!!

1975, that would be the year my sister spent argueing with my father over the greatness of the Bay City Rollers compared to the Beatles.

I'm 62 and think 60s are the reward years, more time, more mony, more choices.

Thanks Dave - boy were some of those familiar - twas nice remembering. Wouldn't want to be back there, but ain't sorry I was there :D We actually listened to the radio - my dad refused to get a TV for many years. So sunday tradition was listing to the Navy Lark (left hand down a bit) and Round the Horn.

I think thats one of the reasons I am thoroughly enjoying watching Boys v Girls. Modern day kids transported back to 50/60s grammer school education. I actually felt sorry for the kids who described their current education/lives

Some schools were pretty pretty brutal places in the 50s and 60s Fran. I hated school which is largely why I became a teacher - in order to make things better for kids.
I think the pressures on kids now are very much greater than in the past, they have so more much to cope with and a massive amount of knowledge and skills to assimilate.

Yes, Sunday lunchtime and The Navy Lark on the radio (or wireless) was one of the high points of the week. Then of course Dixon of Dock Green or The Groves in glorious monochrome on the TV!

Having passed the 'Scholarship' I went to a grammer school- which I hated and couldn't wait to leave. However, later in life I realised how priviledged I had been to go there compared to the local Secondary Modern school and, believe it or not I sent my own daughter to that same school and she loved it! Was also amazed at Parent/Teacher evenings to find that several of my own teachers were still working there and when it came to the 'Annual Meeting' my daughter was surprised that I could still remember the words to the school song.
    Happy Days?

I remember a lot of (possibly unintentional) cruelty, even in primary school. There was one kid who was so scared of this particular formidable elderly lady teacher that when she told him off, he hid under the desk! And another who had a terrible stammer, and was always being told off when he had to read aloud. That sort of thing would never happen now.
The competitive atmosphere we had was great for the bright kids, but totally switched off the less able. And the IQ test that was used to decide who went to the Grammar (Academy in Scotland) rather than the secondary modern, didn't always get it right. My husband, who has a PhD, went to the secondary modern, andseveral people he's worked with had the same experience. So, agree with DaveW - it wasn't all good. I started school in 1964, BTW
