    :lollol: Love them William.... :rotfl:

 On a more serious note I do remember an uncle from Rotherham who grew exhibition veg said you should never compost carrot tops because they attracted the fly... He burnt all his & strangely I don't remember his carrots ever being attacked they were always beautiful.. So it has to be smell as a major attraction I think.. I shall try more garlic & marigolds around this year perhaps....:D

Sounds like you could be right plantman, but I like the fun of companion planting when I can as well...:D

''Found this interesting little tit bit at the Carrot Museum...''
''You will often see the suggestion that growing onions in between the carrots keeps the carrot fly at bay. The idea is that the onion smell fools the female fly, which is otherwise attracted by the lingering foliage scent after carrot thinning. Alas this lovely romantic idea rarely works in practice''

As I thought ! Don't get me wrong I would love it to work but experience tells me otherwise

Has anyone here found that planting onions or anything else with carrots has prevented carrot fly while others nearby have suffered?

Wiseoldowl - I'm still not sure wether you are crediting the onions or the raised planters for preventing the infestation?

Good evening Lovage,I am crediting both work for me.well me being an incurable romantic I use both methods One row of Onions then One row of carrots alternating rows at ground level and and plastic dustbins for height, and It works for a lot of people for some it seems it doesn't,but it works for me,this is what this gardening Forum is all about ,different opinions ,different methods and a great discussion, hope this helps.:)

I notice that the above quote uses the word rarely, and not doesn't work:)

:thumb: Gotta keep trying Woo haven't we... I had very good success last year considering I did not plant many onions or garlic between but this year am going to do it a little differently to see... I have to say planting naturtiums by my beans & cabbages certainly made a difference to the caterpillars & blight last year so this year will plant a few more of them around & they are so colourful too along with some marigolds.... Now did you know this about French marigolds..??
