    R.I.P. Angelina.

Rest in pieces to my beloved Angelina Astra (below). She has departed to the great Salvage yard in the sky, following an accident. I was hit from behind, and she had to have her roof cut off.

I am hoping to collect Anastasia (meaning: Resurrection) Astra on Friday. She is deep sky blue. Pic to follow.

Sorry if I have missed any Birthdays etc.

Blimey NG,sorry to hear you have been in an accident and that your beloved car Angelina has gone to that scrapyard in the sky.So glad that you are ok although at the time you was probably a bit shook up if they had to cut the roof off of your old car:sad:

Good luck with the new addition and hope you have many safe and happy motoring years ahead of you:smile:

Sorry to hear of your accident NG and hope there was no damage to yourself even though you've lost your car. We look forward to meeting Anastasia. :)

Sorry to hear of the accident @NorthantsGeezer - must have been one hell of a shunt if they had to cut the roof off. I hope any injuries were found to be minor?

We'll look forward to seeing your new motor when it arrives.

We bought our first new car for 13 years this week, finally deciding it was time for the Toyota Corolla 1.6 T Spirit to move on and be replaced by a Toyota Yaris 1.33 Design with extra bits. Mrs Strongy has had a trouble free Yaris for 5 years, now 11 years old so we are staying with Toyotas.

All the best with the new car Strongy. :) The Yaris is such an easy comfortable car to drive and I seriously considered buying one. Unfortunately Mr S being tall couldn't get a decent seat position in it.

We may be looking for a new car for Mrs Shiney next year (her current one, Volvo S40, will be 17 years old) but we don't know what to go for. She does very low mileage and her main criteria is a lot of boot space. She does less than 3,000 miles per year so speed is unimportant. Preferably four doors, not too large a vehicle if possible, good visibility, rear parking sensors (can be an optional extra), possible built in satnav although she's used to her portable one, good driver's position (she uses a seat booster at the moment). I haven't asked her what other criteria she has but we shall discuss it next year. I guess that a small SUV may be a possibility (don't need 4 wheel drive).

I didn't really want to downsize but anything similar to the Corolla (Auris) had gained in size each time it was revamped in the last 12 years or so, I had thought of the Golf or Audi 3 but Mrs S prefered or was more comfortable with the Yaris size although even this one is bigger than her 'oldie'.

Cars get bigger every revamp, as you say. The mini, is much bigger than the golden oldies.
My money wasn't in the bank when I checked earlier, so the collection of Anastasia has been delayed, much to my annoyance . I wanted her for Christmas :cry3:

I have never had one , but for reliability you cannot go wrong with a Toyota :dbgrtmb:

Tons of good SUV's on the go @shiney - Juke, Qashqai (I love mine - - most economical car I have ever had), Kuga, Sportage, Kodiaq, Kadjar......

For comfort, economy and kit, I still reckon the Qashqai is a winner - electric everything, sat-nav, bluetooth, a very clever boot, panoramic roof, reversing cameras (all round on the higher trim levels), and mine runs on about £50-£60 of diesel a month, and that is around town.

We were recommended to test drive the Yaris hybrid but as it was auto we declined prefering manual.
No sat-nav for us, we still use road signs and an up to date road Atlas.

I know cars do seem to be getting bigger, and some of those 4x4 must be like driving a truck when you get them on the lanes, but are they really that much bigger?

I sometimes think its about the design, and appearance, most are higher, but how much bigger I just have to wonder.

With the very low mileage that she does the economy is not one of the factors to take into account but comfort and safety features would be. Satnav would be good as would reversing cameras. Bluetooth would be a waste of time as we don't have phones. Good boot space is a must. :dbgrtmb:

When she's ready to buy we shall look at all those. Thanks :)

I have looked at this often @pete , but only for a few cars, and I would say that most have increased in size. According to some car forums , my mk2 Astra (c reg) was 1.812m wide, and 3.998 long, whereas my Astra J (63 plate) is 2013 wide, and 4419 long. I agree that new cars look higher too, and no doubt are.
The Insignia looks huge compared to my old Cavaliers and Vectras, which they replaced.
After driving a new Corsa for the last few weeks, I was glad to get back into an Sri Astra.
Why? More bodywork around me, lower to the ground, wider, and therefore feels more solid, safer, and comfortable on the road. If the car skidded sideways, I would like to think it would spin, rather than roll.
How much bigger is the new mini, compared to the old one? Anyone got figures?
