Not about cars but three cylinder engines...................
Way back in 2002 Aprillia entered the new four stroke Moto GP class with the RS Cube. It had a three cylinder engine developed by Cosworth and amongst its innovations it had fly by wire throttle and pneumatic valves. As a result of this the engine revved a fair bit higher than anything else on the grid (in excess of 20000rpm) but, and it is a big but, it had the power delivery of a switch! The power delivery was that violent that Regis Laconi ended up with stress fractures in his wrist as a result of trying to hang on to it!
They gave up on it in 2004.

And on a similar theme, Hondas first bike of the four stroke Moto GP era was the RC 211V which used a V5 engine. It was far more successful!

I know. What I was pointing out was that three cylinder engines have been successful as both two and four strokes in both petrol and diesel form.

Honda also had the RC 149 back in 1966. A straight 5 125cc engine which was unbeatable in its class. So the 2002 Aprilia is only yesterday. At least, it is in my mind! :snorky:

Well I know this thread is about cars but I just would like to say I love my new van (Ford Connect). Bought new in November as I took advantage of Ford's scrappage scheme when I had to say a tearful goodbye to my old Subaru. So far :fingers crossed: everything has been spot on with it. I decided to go for the top of the range/most powerful, so it has all the making life better type additions like rear parking sensors (useful with no back windows!), brilliant heated front windscreen, heated seat , better seats/steering wheel plus other bits and pieces that the basic model doesn't have.
Having been used to something which seriously "went" I do need to be down a gear sometimes to get a bit of ummph but apart from that it's great. How it would be if full of stuff I don't know but so far I have absolutely no regrets buying it. I still have the odd raz as we have another Subaru (WRX STI 330S) This is extremely quick if you put it in sports sharp mode, slight snag is that you have to stop at every petrol station you pass to fill up:).I miss the Recaro seats which the Subaru has (most comfortable out ONCE you get into them:)) however I do not miss the large fuel bills I used to get.According to the computer in the van I am averaging around 52 mpg (diesel), that will do me nicely. Oh yes it is NOT white I really didn't fancy being called a white van man...well woman actually:lunapic 130165696578242 5:

Mazda developed the Wankel engine , and as far as I know where the last to use it . Not sure if anyone produces it in volume now ?

The Maxda RX8 was the last car to use a wankel engine, it was discontinued in 2012, another good looking car in my opinion:
