I buy them usually at two to three years old, then move them on before the value bottoms out on them

Today's the day I say goodbye to Henry Honda and hello to Pepe le Peugeot. The dogs will probably have made him look 'lived in' by Sunday.

In the early 60's a friend of mine bought one of these

                    It was a Ford GT40 Mark I

We were in the merchant navy together for a few years and he won a lot of money on the horses in Cape Town (I think he won about £7,000 - a fortune in those days). He told me he was going to buy a flashy car when he got home but didn't say anything else about it. He left the ship when he got home and went into partnership with his brother in a secondhand car dealers.

Sometime after I finally left the ships (must have been 1964/65 ) I got a phone call from him to come and see his new car. I travelled all the way to Slough not knowing what to expect and it turned out to be one of the first road versions of the car.

He said he'd let me have a go at driving it and got permission to take me to the Ford test track just down the road. You can imagine that I was quite excited :yahoo:. It didn't quite turn out like that! It was the most uncomfortable, frightening drive I've ever had!! :yikes: I chickened out at 145 mph :phew: and just drove it back to the pits. I never did tell him I hated the car.

I certainly had trouble getting into the car and I was fit in those days! :noidea: The car sat so low on the road that it was awful to drive on public roads. It'd be impossible with all the potholes we have nowadays.

The GT40 was the iconic sixties sports car. It was supposed to be a road car for classification , but was designed by Ford to win the Le Mans 24 hour race . Which I think it did two or three times. The 40 in GT40 was its height in inches !
