PS roders I think that smile is horrrible, it reminds me of a delphinium I have that flowers white, then blue then every colour in between - just can't make its mind up.

I may tie myself in knots here, but I do remember as a child being told about male and female catkins, I think one of them had a red bit on it. My tree must be about 10 years old, though I have moved it about four times. I do prune it hard, and it does sucker, anyone got any idea how I get nuts.

(phew I think I got through that one OK - no **** came back at me anyway)

and roders, no need to apologise, I am not new to computers, just hopeless!

Roders' smiley ahs got me confused - but was it the corkscrew hazel you were asking about, re prning / trimming?? If so, then what I did with mine was, first remove suckers from the base - they'd take over, and they're straight. Then take out about a third of it, so it's got plenty of space inside, and gives plenty of space for the leaves to grow, otherwise it gets incredibly dense. It certainly kept ours in good order, and the cat loved to climb in it! :D

Corkscrew Hazel to-day at a local garden centre £349.
    How old could it be?
Is it worth this kind of money?

It does seem pricey but you're buying time. There's a nursery near here that sells mature trees and they're very expensive. My trees have matured with me and are all paying dividends as the years go by. After 21 plus years of growth my garden contents are definitely worth more than my house contents.

quite agree, Petal - my corkscrew hazel was a lot bigger than that - but it was 14 years old. We'd seen very expensive ones at the GC when we bought our one for rather less than £20, but I reckon it was worth several hundred when we had to leave it. ;)
