central heating failure anyone any experience of new install

    Bathroom towel rails/rads are normally semi-independant of the rest of the radiators as they are connected so they will operate from either/both the space or water heating systems

    So that small expansion tank will have three pipes. One pipe is the supply, fed from the mains with a ballcock allowing it to fill to a certain level. The second pipe at the top of the tank above water level is the overflow in case the ballcock fails. The third pipe at the bottom connects to your radiators and that is the one I think might be disconnected. So the tank may fill up but this does not mean your CH will work if that pipe is capped off somewhere else in the house.

      What I was going to add was that any expansion pipe from the bathroom radiator could only have been some sort of secondary vent pipe and there should also have been a larger one for the rest of the heating systems.

      Thanks all
      I went in the attic this morning, and they have cut and capped the expansion pipe from the radiator/towel rail
      I have the original installer of the boiler, the one that changed all the parts recently, coming on Wednesday, he says he will be able to set it up working and I was not to worry about anything MAJOR He does not know about the header tank yet (though it is full of water and connected)

      He also said it was what John and Mowgley came up with, lack of water feed so boiler shuts down, or mis adjusted thermal coupler

      I will post back when I get news

          Just had another thought Jack, the system might just need bleeding - over the summer without much use you can get air locks, so bleeding all the rads might help and any other places you have bleed valves fitted

          Our heating plumber arrived on time first thing this morning
          Checked out all the work he had previously done, did tests and announced boiler Fine

          Explained what was happening to him again, and that I had discovered the wet room gang had sealed the expansion open vent pipe, confirmed by him looking at the pipes on our still open ceiling below the wet room
          He would not touch the wet room gangs work and advised us to get them back to rectify it,
          water heats up and expands, up through the vent system, if boiler gets to hot it vents the pressure out, if it can not then the boiler has a thermal shut down sensor, which fortunately is working or the boiler goes boom

          I will give him praise as he was with us a full two hours no charge

          WET ROOM Gang almost impossible to contact, (eventually reluctantly given the number by the Council who use them for this work) Answer phone, mid afternoon tried again, to be told they are not responsible for boiler work, explained situation, and he advised they were commencing October weeks holiday tomorrow

          As a thought Jack,
          Don't give up Jack keep hounding them till they come back out. It's not the boiler they have to touch, just the balls up of the pipe work they have made!

            Jack - was the job to do your wet room booked directly with the contractor, or did the council appoint them?

            Julie is disabled, so we were directed to the council, as although we have savings, she was entitled to council help, they gave us 50% towards it
            We had no choice in contractor, just who they use for such work

            To be honest, with my background, and training I could do the job myself but not qualified

            The contractor was rubbish from the start and a few deniable thefts
            We had a six months old Mira elite ST 9.8kw £500
            That was removed and vanished in about ten minutes to be replaced a week later with a Mira enthuse 8kw £200
            The six month old steel bath vanished and along with the bath and sink taps went away in a van obviously to the scrap man or to someone who wanted a job on the side

            The door to the bathroom obviously had to be reduced to allow it to open, by about half an inch, the thing was ruined
            The sink and toilet almost new quality ceramics were broken up and the cheapest of cheap disabled ceramics in place,
            Then they broke the toilet bowl screwing it down
            The council billed me for a special extractor fan mains to be fitted with a pull cord outside, then 12v at the fan £200
            The electrician turned up with a 240v basic £12 fan from CEF and advised no one wants the new fan as it keeps them awake at night when it starts itself up, he then linked it direct to the light fitting, so the light had to be on when you take a shower to use it
            I asked then how the hell can it turn itself on during the night to annoy me ? again the mouse accepted it
            Next four weeks later the ceiling in my computer room/den fell in with water pouring out, now it had not done it in the past 40 years, so I called them
            I admit I did all the tests with them, buckets of water on the floor , flush loo dozens of times run sink, run shower for an hour, run everything at once, nothing, until the next time it rained
            Where they had removed the old cistern they left the hole in the wall, the new cistern overflows into the toilet bowl, I do not have a ladder high enough to reach the hole, and the cost of a hundred weight of cement to use about a half pint of mix

            It was summer, we do not use the central heating in summer, and we were on holidays most of it anyway

            Comes the chill a couple of weeks ago, and the central heating failed
            Yes it is old and not used since April, so it must be that, heating plumber who originally fitted and serviced it, (we did not realise about the change of radiator as I had advised the wet room gang that IT WAS AN EXPANSION RADIATOR AND VENT

            So far I am ~£550 down, a ceiling to replace, and waiting for the denial gang to call us after their holiday :cry3::cry3:

            I might ask Shiney to compose me a strong letter to the council or who ever :love30:

            I'd say you have a very strong case against the council, @shiney's opinion would be good.

            The main thing is to get your CH working asap though Jack.

            I take it you do have hot water still coming from the boiler?

            Jack, it seems a bit complicated at the moment but I'm trying to get my head around the info.

            I'll see whether I have the basics correct. :scratch: You need to bear in mind that I'm totally non-DIY so don't understand technical stuff - which shouldn't be necessary when communicatin with the authority.

            A job needed doing (not quite sure exactly what it was!).

            The local authority took responsibility for getting it done (you said you had no choice in the matter).

            The job was botched by the people that they insisted had to be used.

            You had an independent expert come to check the system and he agrees that it's a botch up - but didn't do anything to it himself.

            If those are the facts then it seems to me that the local authority should be responsible for seeing that it gets fixed.

            Is your expert prepared to put in writing what the fault is? If he is then let him write it, let me have a look at it to see whether it's worded correctly and then it can be used to back up your argument. Then I can draft a letter to the authority.

            As there seems to be a lot of other problems, that may or may not be related, we could have a look at those separately. This is where I'm a little confused as all the problems don't appear to be related to the urgent matter of the sealed expansion vent pipe.

            Are all the other problems just things that have occurred around the same time but not directly related to them? If so, then we should concentrate on getting your system working properly and your ceiling repaired - which all seem to be down to the local authority.

            Have I summed it up correctly?

              For what its worth, I agree with shiney - the council are responsible for getting this sorted. I'd be inclined to start jumping all over them, and given the time of year I would say that a 14-day deadline to it being fully completed is not unreasonable;

              Do you still have 'The Judge' in one of the Sunday papers Jack? I know that he/she used to be good at getting things moving in cases like this.

              08:00 today, wet room company arrived (well the plumber did)
              I explained to him what was wrong, showed him the circuit diagram, and the heating engineers bill, advised him where the capping of the pipes were, so he did not have to spend too long looking (perhaps doing several a week for a few months he would not remember mine)

              He looked and put his hands up, said sorry it was me,, said he would have to lift the floorboards etc, I advised he could work through the ceiling as it is still open
              I explained why it was letting in water, he agreed hole should have been made up
              They had a full installation on today, then shut down for a week October holidays so could not do the work until they return from holidays

              We said well we will wait a week, IF after the plumbing repair, they made good the ceiling

              Contacted his boss, and it is agreed for a week on Monday

              Still down the money paid for the boiler "repair" but it was done in good faith and I really want it all behind me over and done with, so no arguments in a claims court against the other lot
