And as you get older it seems to take longer to feel warm again - but you youngsters won't know that. :old: :heehee:

Connect bike to alternator, alternator to grid and free electricity all round. Okay might need a rota to keep supply constant.

        You're a genius.
I'm just wondering how much this is all going to cost.:biggrin:

Great idea. There are loads of tv adverts for expensive bike exercisers so if they were all connected to the grid we would all get free electric.

They all seem to have an internet connection, connecting to the grid shouldn't be that difficult.
Any slackers could then get a quick jolt if pedalling drops below a certain level.
          Btw, I can't ride a bike.

Gas is far cheaper £GBP per Kwh.

I was interested to see that there is such a thing as an all electric boiler - that plugs into the space where a gas boiler would go - but the sting in the tail is the MAHOOSIVE increase in the Kwh cost.

I would reckon that when we go all nuclear - then houses will start to be built with electric boilers - we're running out of fossil fuels.

When I first read this I though for a minute you were going to hang a small reactor on the wall.:roflol:

But I think the fact that gas is still cheaper than electric suggests to me that electric will never be cheap, it doesn't matter how much they prattle on about carbon neutral, wind farms, wave power, hydro electric and nuclear power, we will always pay top price for it.

The day the gas stops flowing will make this cost of living crisis look like a picnic.

Of course, that is assuming that the heat produced by a kWh of gas is the same as that produced by a kWh of electricity. In most cases there is heat loss when using gas so they are not directly comparable. The current (no pun intended) thinking is that you need at least 25% more kWh of gas than you need of electricity to produce the same result. Installing a new electric boiler instead of a new gas boiler is also much cheaper. Swings and roundabouts! :noidea:

I kind of get the Kwh thing with electric but I find it hard to understand when used for gas.
I seem to remember years ago gas was sold in therms, based on Btus, how that relates to Kwhs I just cant understand.

Not being good at this stuff, but where do Joules fit in and calories as far as I know a watt has nothing to do with heat anyway.
Its almost like they are using the same units for two completely different things that work in completely different ways, so are they even comparable in the first place?:rolleyespink:

I remember being told by a school teacher over 50yrs ago that car engine outputs should be in KW and not BHP.
I never understood it then and I still dont.

We have a new combi boiler, good double glazing, cavity wall and roof insulation, thermostatic valves on all bar the main radiator and Hive control. However, we have cats, so all the doors need to be open. My good lady goes into a room, feels cold (even though she is only going to be in there a few minutes) and cranks up the thermostat. She will be sitting watching the television and say "Is it cold or is it me?". I tell her it must be her as I am fine, so she sticks the "Boost" on.
Oh yes, we have to leave the TV on when we go out so that the cats don't get lonely (the two cats that are upstairs in the overheated bedroom sleeping on the bed).
She will get shut eye with a bang when the bills start coming in next winter.

I've been at my daughter's this afternoon looking after my grandchildren. The boiler broke down a few days ago but it feels ok in her flat without any heating. She gets borrowed heat from the adjoining flats. Even in the depths of winter she hardly switches the heat on. Her monthly energy Bill is less than a quarter of ours. We have an old detached house difficult to insulate.
