It's not difficult to get chillies to grow tall (unless they're a dwarf variety) but it can take a couple of years or so. This one was three years old (pruned back in the winter) and reached 7ft.

Second and third years were excellent and much better than the first year.
      They also got producing quicker.

November of second year - in lounge by french doors.

Fourth year was not so good but may have been my fault as I didn't repot them - only added more compost and fed them.

Fifth year (last year), I didn't overwinter them indoors (which I did other years) but put them in the summerhouse - which has the chill kept off but not nice and warm like the house . One died, and the others weren't happy so they got moved to the greenhouse in May and didn't produce very much. I left them in the greenhouse (unheated) all winter but sitting in an open propagator. Two survived but don't look happy and I won't keep them after this year.

Thats an awesome time line with loads of info thanks. We grow fresh every year, bit of a pain but worth it on some the only plants we over winter are the chinenses.

Sorry, I've been thinking about it and I'm a couple of years out. I've just checked back and I picked the seeds, originally, when I was visiting some spice farms on Madagascar and Zanzibar in the winter of '04/'05.

That last photo was taken Nov '07 and the first one was taken Aug '08 so the years were correct but there are another two years inbetween. So the plants must have been gradually producing less each year and when I said 'fifth year' it would have been seventh year.

The only good memory required was to remember where in my photo files the pictures were. :heehee: The dates can be got from the photos.

On my camera the date doesn't get put onto the pictures but it can be shown if I click on 'Properties' on the computer.
