Lol ok the boy was only eating a habanero lol, theres quite a few prolific breeds that can grow compactly such as f1 apache which produce good medium heat pods about 1inch in length good for cooking with sometimes surprising heat. What size plant are you looking to grow? Are you looking for heat or flavour? Growing space and location?

Oh, I can take a little bit of harbenero lol
Flavour probably, as long as there is enough heat :-)
I can allow for most as I haven't yet bought anything, how much growing space would you suggest I leave?

It all depends on what breeds you want to grow. If you have a look on thechilliman website i cant remember it exactly but a google search will bring you to it. Personally i would always advise something a little different, one of my favourites this season is my peruvian white habanero. Currently about 6 months old and looks like this but restricted its growth with the pot size

I have some commercial breeds over a meter tall but theyre pretty borin.g with pretty low heat. If your new to growing chillis i would always recommend something like the f1 apache as its an easy grower no heated propogation or seed popping needed to get it to germinate and pot size can be restricted to grow on your kitchen windowsill all year round. If you want something a bit more specialist have a look around before you buy or request seeds or if you find something you like the look of let us know im sure either myself or one of the other growers will be able to appropriately advise you!!

So i thought it was about time i update the chilli "grow" as so to speak, well white hab is still setting pods left right and center. This is quickly becoming a favourite, [IMG]node 1[IMG]node 2

Good info, James and a nice crop :dbgrtmb:

For those of you wanting to grow for the first time - I would be wary of planning to grow them in the open garden. Depending on weather, they usually need to be under cover with lots of light. A greenhouse is best or plastic type growing space (usually given the unglamorous nickname of a 'blowaway'). Bright windowsills are the next choice.

Just to show off a bit :heehee:. The other year I had three plants that were cropping quite well and picked these in mid November.

Yes, They are always consistently hot and are way up near the top of the Scoville Scale.

Being small, they tend to dry very well by just being left in a warm room on some kitchen paper. I still have some that are five years old - and the seeds are still viable. They have a good germination rate but a very poor survival rate.
