Oh, yes - forgot to mention. I turned the tray 180° just before taking the first photo this morning, and barely two hours later, the seedlings were going in the other direction. So I'm going to be rotating the tray every couple of hours, I think.

It really depends on the temperature in your kitchen. Our kitchen (and other windowsills we keep our chilli seedlings on) is quite warm. You don't need much in the way of heating whilst they're at this stage. During the day it's quite warm in our kitchen and at night it drops to 18/19C but on the windowsill it is bound to be somewhat cooler. Most chillies don't mind this temperature whilst they're growing. Heat for germinating is good but I suspect your may be getting leggy from too much heat. We move our chillies back under heat when they're flowering and fruiting just to speed them up.

Most young seedlings look a bit like yours. :blue thumb:

This is one of our trays of seedlings and they won't be transplanted until they have another couple of leaves.

If you look at the same tray two weeks ago (below) they're not much different from yours.

When they were like mine, what did you do with them?

So this is now the tray. Your comments about too much heat, twigged something about my catastrophic 2018 failures. I have removed the tray and it's on the window sill. Our kitchen is an extension and in winter is rather cool, but so far, our outside thermometer says it fell to 1.1°C overnight, which probably means about 8-12°C inside.

I shall monitor, and if it looks like they're struggling, will move them elsewhere.

Sown my meagre amount today - Jalapeno, Joe's Long and Hot Paprika. As memory serves the paprika ones didn't germinate last year so fingers crossed...

Absolutely nothing! Just watered them, lightly, every so often (when the surface felt dryish).

Oh! I forgot. I talk nicely to them. :dbgrtmb:

This raises an interesting point. When do I consider that my 'exotic' seeds that are still inside the propagator, in pots, are definitively lost?

          :-)

Sounds good. Thank you. I am now looking forward to seeing more leaves on the ones inside the tray, in their new position.

If this year's crop works, I'm going to double the amount I sow next year.

Yes, but you have taken them out of the propagator, once they poke their heads above the parapet?

I usually give chillies 3 weeks tops if they're in a heated unit

How hot have you set it? Assuming there's a control of course, not all do

Are you talking about exotic chillies? If so, then they take longer to germinate than less exotic ones. Six weeks seems too long, though.

I don't start chillies off in a propagator. I just put them in a seed sprouter and leave them on the kitchen worktop. Germination time is usually 4 - 7 days for the 'ordinary' ones and 10 - 14 days for the Naga types.

              Right.

I'm going on the assumption that I still have time for this year. I'm going to nab a seed sprouter. Recommendations?

              Question: do I ..

              1. buy new seeds and put them into the seed sprouter?

              2. dig the seeds out of the earth and use them?
