Chillies 2023

I've done something a little odd as an experiment; I threw a knock box full of old coffee grounds into the potting mix. I'll mix it all through and pot some on later and see what happens

 

I've done some with and some without so will see if it makes any difference. Have just thought coffee grounds do go mouldy quickly though so this might not have been a good idea!

 

Coffee grounds are a good soil improver and have some nutritional value so in theory a good addition to a compost mix.

It absolutely, definitely and utterly did not have anything to do with the compost bucket being next to the back door and was convenient to dump used coffee grounds

 

Yes, they normally get lobbed on the azalea bed

 

They are good for adding nitrogen but too much in the compost can be bad, especially for young plants. If you have too much nitrogenous waste without enough carbon rich waste (leaves, paper, woodchip/sawdust etc.) it will cause it to become anaerobic (lack oxygen) and become smelly and slimy.

 

Shouldn't be a problem with modern mpc then

 

Sowed some Kashmiri seeds today after the mirasols failed.
I've taken the small chilli plants out of the propagator and placed them in a tray on the floor which has underfloor heating. It will just be a bit cooler than 30 degrees!

 

Update on the coffee grounds experiment - I wouldn't bother. The jalapenos were fine and put on good growth, the other varieties took on a more yellow tinge and weren't as strong. Might be the variety but I've swapped the compost for regular mpc with perlite and will see if it improves
