I think you can get nematodes for them, probably too late once the damage is done? The general advice is to water from the bottom. I don’t understand that though, surely the top will still become wet? I have tried ordinary fly spray when I’ve seen them flying around, but that didn’t seem to work. I suppose the best bet is to put on a layer of grit when potting up, I think that’s what I would do.

Thanks Freddy. I have used fly spray after taking all the plants out, just to kill the adults. But the grubs are still in the compost and after a couple of weeks a new generation arrives.

I'm going to take them all out and leave on the patio. I believe being outside deters them. Plus add a layer of grit.

Just been doing a bit of reading…the life cycle suggests that in a couple of weeks, any infestation should subside, provided you can keep the adults away. I also noted that they can transfer fungal diseases, such as botrytis.
One of the methods used to control included a mulch of grit, about 1 cm:thumbsup:

I always see them as a pest of house plants that are overwatered.
I've never come across them in the greenhouse.
Maybe its the cold spring where the surface of the compost is not drying out.

I have. I guess the problem comes when you move pots around. I also think that open bags of compost can attract them.

Could be, I have been careful watering as chillies/peppers don't like being wet anyway.

Moving them outside has got rid of the fungus gnats, they have all put on a visible growth spurt plus the first flowers have opened.

My tester plants have responded well in the greenhouse so they're all in the soil now. Pending mouse attack... :th scifD36:

I wrote the variety on the previous pot they were in, so have just kept them there to remind me which is which

Same seed packet, same compost same conditions, Aleppo chilli.
                                So natural variation.
