Kashmiri on the right are very mild. Next to them is Thai Dragon very hot and the first single tabasco, medium heat.

I've got two more plants down the allotment with chillis left after picking these. The sun is too low to catch the greenhouse there now. Hr ones outside in my garden are still producing too though.

I think some candied peppers will be made, as I've frozen, dried and made enough hot sauce.

        Hello all,

Harvested the Thai Birds Eye chilis this morning and cut down the plants. It yielded 1.2kg of pods (more than I could possibly use). I'll have to do the same with the remaining Cayennes and Jalapeños later this week.

          Hello again,

Just finished harvesting the Cayenne peppers. I then cut down the plants. Final harvest of the Cayennes was 694g though we have taken many pods off earlier.

I have sealable vacuum bags arriving later today so these pods and the Birds Eyes are heading for the freezer. I'll try to harvest the last few Jalapeños tomorrow or Thursday. I still have a few sweet peppers left to pick so I may make a bulk curry this afternoon using some of them (probably Balti).

          By for now

Do you dry any ademission? Ive dried a lot this year, probably enough for two years worth of cooking. I'm quite looking forward to growing things other than chillis and tomatoes in the greenhouses next year :heehee:

              Hanglow,
Yes I do dry my chilis. I have a dehydrator and have already made chili flakes. Usually I cut the chilis longways before dehydrating to let the moisture out quickly. I've already produced 4 small jars of flakes from my Cayennes which I use for pizzas, soups etc.

Yes, any varieties of sweet peppers you can recommend? I grew gherkins for many years, not done so for a few though so may try again. Also melon and maybe aubergine

I'm growing Gypsy for the first time alongside Sweet Etiuda. Both are good.

                      Noted!

Last harvest from allotment with the frost forecast for this weekend. About a kg of mainly green peppers. I also cut two aji Norteno and two aji mochero to try and overwinter them inside the house. Will clean up their roots and put them into fresh compost and keep them inside.

                        Hello all,
Just been vacuum sealing my Cayennes and Birds Eye chillies. Should easily last till next year's crop.

Jalapeños to follow later this week and then we are finished for the season.

Yes, I have 2 freezer drawers specifically for various chillies. I threw out the remaining chillies from last year to make some room for these.

I crush mine before bagging them and they go in zip bags. I do press the air out before sealing but obviously not as good as vacuum sealing. I put an even flat layer in each zip and when I make buns or jellies or whatever, I can either use the whole bag or just snap off a junk.

And you're right, they last until harvest next year , just ...:phew:

I stopped drying, freezing and pickling chillies years ago. I prefer to eat my chillies raw as I like the raw flavour, and only grow hot ones.

I manage to go most of the year with fresh ones as the ones I crossbred (ShineyHybrids) about 15 years ago tend to last through into February and sometimes March - kept in a heated propagator. I also overwinter one or two of those and they give me an early start in the Spring and was able to pick some, not many, In April. The only other variety I grow now are Nagas (for all the local Indian restaurants) and they don't overwinter or last as long.

Apart from those just for fresh use I, now, only grow extra plants for sale and most of those are ordered in advance - with a few spares. Since we stopped opening the garden we don't really need to grow extras.

I'm pleased to see that @CanadianLori is still managing to continue with the hybrids and, I think, she also finds that they have a lot less problem with aphids. Other members who used to come and visit, and buy the plants, are also continuing to propagate them. :dbgrtmb:
