Chillies 2024

Been a rotten year for my chillis in the popup greenhouse. Jalapenos only have three or four fruit, my three poblanos have one between them, rocotos maybe four. Outside the locotos have an abundance of fruit but they like cool weather and don't mind single digit nights.

I think next year I'll grow the chillis in the converted shed which stays warmer at night and maybe grow bush tomato's in the popup.

Aubergines and melons can get in the bin too

 

Home made curry from scratch, tonight. There may be a chilli (saved seed, so variety unknown) or two, plus hg garlic in there. Sadly out of fenugreek leaves.
Salad vegged out.

 

3rd year for single "basket of fire" (BOF) plant, not quite as many fruit yet, but enough to keep us going. New second plant just re-potted and only 10-15cm tall, but flower forming.

 

@JWK ours are only starting to flower!

Do you cut out the seeds from the Jalapenos or do you include them?

I tend to include some of them as when they are green the seeds are soft so edible. But closer to the stem there can be a few to many so I don't tend to include them

That is a bigger jalapeno variety than normal i think, they are about 6 inches. Average heat I'd say.

I've grown jalapeno early before and that's quite a bit more stumpy and also hotter. If I want a hotter chilli for Mexican food I think serrano is better. Last year i grew Jalapeno M, I think I prefer telica, although this year has bee rubbish weather wise for growing them

Very ornamental plant, chillis are hot with little flavour, but useful too for that reason

 

As I enjoy chillies but they have to be cool so I read up on them. A lot if the heat is in the tips and ends and obviously the seeds but also the membrane that runs down the centre of each half when you cut them open length wise.

 

Now I'm not really a chilli guy more a sweet pepper freak. But I've grown a few basket of fire, loads of fruit on them so thought give one a go...

Hello all,

I've been doing a bit of research on the larger varieties of Jalapeño peppers with a view of buying my next year's seeds. It seems that two of the bigger ones are "Mammoth" and "Goliath". Do any of you have experience with these? Please let me know how you got on with either of these if you've tried them.
