Don't bother! :lunapic 130165696578242 5: You wouldn't like them. :snorky:

They were first brought out in the 30's and became very popular as a party snack by the 70's. After the 80's they went into decline and, although still sold, will never come back as such a popular snack.

      You're
not missing much, mince pies are grossly overrated otherwise we would be eating them all year round, most of the Christmas "stuff" is based on years ago when you couldn't afford or get such stuff all year round and they were considered christmas treats.

My aunt came over from, OZ a few years ago and all they wanted her to take back home was twiglets, bit like cardboard strips coated in marmite, but then in OZ they seem to rave about Vegemite, so perhaps that explains it.

We have home made mince pies, Christmas cake and two Christmas puddings (one in the freezer for Easter) none have alcohol but we are the exception to the rule.

Sausagemeat stuffing is a must which is my contribution to the Christmas meal!

Yes, we have Christmas Crackers and I buy them every year. One year the toys were whistles , each with a different note. We could whistle Christmas tunes that did not stray outside of the one octave.

we have a turkey, with dressing, cranberry sauce, and all the usual veggies.

I am just finishing up making dessert platters with several kinds of cookies including gingerbread men plus fritcake and mince tarts.

              we also enjoy a trifle.

The grandchildren love the paper hats and snapping the crackers.

There will be 14 of us for dinner. I will set a place for anyone who wants to join us :)

Did anyone else notice the fundamental flaw in the article?

It's telling our American friends why they're failing at Christmas dinner, yet it centres around a roast turkey which is not in the least bit traditional British. We nicked the turkey idea from our American buddies. There is a subtle clue as to what our traditional roast is in the well known ditty that starts...

Christmas is coming, the geese are getting fat. Please put a penny in the old man's hat. If you haven't got a penny, an hapenny will do, if you haven't got an hapenny then god bless you.

Of course times change, which is one of the reasons why life expectancy has increased dramatically in the last century or so.

My Great Great Gran worked in Buckingham Palace, and the family have the original Recipe from there of CHRISTMAS PUDDING, in the family it is made every year in October, with all taking a turn at stirring it and making a wish. The only thing left out now is the Silver Sixpence's wrapped in grease proof paper.

If you wish I will send you a copy, Original from 1901

Yes please send me a copy, Jack. I do have a few very old cookbooks dating back to 1890's. Ahh, but I do have a Silver Sixpence. Well, a silver coin dating back to 1601, is that good enough ( a few of them) gathered in the loot from the deep blue sea.

@redstar I used to have a very small old coin from New Orleans. It was made of copper and coated in silver (don't think the silver was original) and I sold it to a dealer in New Orleans in 1964 for $400. It was a picayune and its original equivalent was, I think, about six cents. It was a good deal for me but I guess he sold it for a lot more. Apparently it was about 150 years old.

In which case, you may need to know the "secret" of what people do with any left over Christmas pudding (it's very rich, so a little goes a long way): slice, then fry in a little butter and serve with cream ;)
