Over here it has the slogan: "Marmite - love it or hate it!" It certainly is an "acquired" taste.

I used to have foreign students come to stay for a couple of weeks during the summertime. One year, a couple of young girls from Russia were staying with us and went crazy for cornflakes! Even kept a very large box of them in their room for snacking on. Anyway, one day at the breakfast table, I had Marmite out because my toddler liked it. They asked if they could have some and I said yes but tried to explain that it wasn't a chocolate spread, but a savoury flavour. They smiled and replied, "Yes, yes, we understand", picked up a knife and spread it, really thickly, on a Wheatabix cereal biscuit They never asked again!

How did you try it? Straight from the jar and on its own?

Before you throw it away, maybe consider trying it in one of these ways: ...

- try it (spread very thinly) on hot, buttered toast; or
- spread (again, very thinly) on a cracker to have with some mature cheddar cheese; or, when making cheese on toast; or,
- add a teaspoon to casseroles/soups; or,
- add a small teaspoon to boiled, hot water to have as a hot drink (very comforting after coming in from the cold!); or,
- whisk a small teaspoon of Marmite with a tablespoon of oil and brush over a chicken before putting in the oven to roast; or,
- as above but, instead of using on the chicken, use it on your roast potatoes;

Basically, it can be used as a spread, as a seasoning and as a basis for a stock. Again, if you remember it is a concentrated flavour, the secret to it is what it goes with.

Yep, tasted it straight from the jar. its still in the fridge, did think I could use it up in soups etc. On the chicken is a good idea, might try next time instead of SALT.
