Why would a peaty soil, with all that lovely organic matter and structure, lack potassium?

Peat is inert, there is very little nutrient content.:gnthb:

But peat soil holds on to nutrients well.

So why would it hold nitrogen, but not potassium?

No matter how it was "maintained"?

Despair not cromar, I planted one intending it to cover the trellis on two sides of my deck but it all but 'disappeared' - it had a few spindly shoots the first year but thereafter it basically gave up and, to be honest I forgot it was even there. Suddenly this year, 5 years after I planted it, it woke up, scrambled through the trellising and gave a prolific show of flowers.

Thank you everyone for an amazing response to my first post on this forum.

I'll just leave the b......r alone as advised; after all it is growing nicely among the pyracantha to a height of 3.5m and is not causing any problem other than the non-flowering.

I will try the potash though.

    Thanks once again.
