    The further away from terracotta coloured plastic you can get it to look the better.

    All very interesting. I really thought wisteria needed deep roots to flourish.

    Of course, I was going to plant a wisteria at the front of the house, where there is plenty of room!

    Not always so Aaron, it is commonly used for Bonsai, and although I don't like the bonsai-ing of trees, in this case it is particularly impressive.

    That's impressive, but it doesn't look right, somehow. Not sure what, just not right....

    thanks for all the advice.

    I'm still confused on what size pot to use? I have googled it and one site says not less than 45 cm for a clematis. Does that mean to grow 2 each side of the pergola I'd have to have 4 big pots or will 2 go in one pot?

    Err on the side of caution, one plant per pot and try and get as big as possible for them so they won't need re-potting for some years. Get pots you like as well-if they are going to be visible you want them to look good!
