Also, If you are looking for Clematis and winter color, try Clematis urophyla which flowers in winter months, when everything else is dead... I also like Hardenbergia, perennial climber and beautiful purple flowers.. It is considered an invasive (by some because of its fast growth) but you are planting in containers so it will look marvelous and cover your fences quickly.
You can try Honeysuckle too, for dewy sweet smelling flowers...
    happy planting

Before you buy something purely for winter flowers, check out what the plant looks like as a whole - if it has tatty, manky, random looking foliage for 12 months but has insignificant flowers for one month you'll have to decide on balance whether it is a good year round addition to your garden. As it is so small, and so visible from your back windows (I imagine) every plant in it has to earn its keep in multi-season good looks. I would prefer a neat evergreen for winter interest.

As a guide to the jasmine size. I have one which covers most of a small shed and has to be pruned every year to discourage it, it's been in the ground for 18 years. Yours will not get as big if it's in a pot.

      Thanks all. :)

We can't have clematis as it's toxic to cats and our cats eat everything - they are house cats and just munch on everything in the garden when we let them out for supervised garden time.

It's been a while since I updated - I've since planted two star jasmine plants at either end of the trellis. I've also planted a winter flowering jasmine in a very large container, and a honeysuckle plant along the right hand wall, which will be trained on wires.

In addition to that I've planted heucheras, some evergreens (pittosporum and other non-toxic evergreens), some dormant phlox and astilbe, and various others. It'll be a learning process and we will see what does well and what doesn't - it's lots of fun having a new hobby.

Very excited for Spring now! :)

Thanks to those who helped me last year. Just wanted to let you know my garden is doing well now and is a far cry from the mess it was when I joined Gardeners Corner last year! I have posted a new thread in the gallery with my photos: My First Garden - progress since October :)
