I think as @RowlandsCastle has posted, it's a ' green manure', the fields are heavy clay and they usually grow crops like wheat, barley etc. I've noticed they give the fields a fallow year periodically so I think that's the purpose.

Heleniums are my favourite perennial because each plant produces flowers that are different and they change as they age. There are several varieties here including H. Sahin's Early Flowerer and H. Moerheim Beauty at different stages.

One of the house leeks that are doing really well now that the blackbirds have stopped pulling them up.

While the rain stopped took some more photos.
This Magnolia grandiflora was bought many many years ago for £1. It is truly magnificent. Some of the flowers kindly opened at the bottom of the huge tree.

They're really spectacular [any Magnolia!] when given the room to do their thing well @On the Levels
My camera isn't particularly good for close ups but the shocking pink on this dianthus always makes me smile. Can't remember which one it is [possibly Neon Star or similar] but it started as a filler for pots in a dull area of a previous garden, and has come with me to every house/garden since then. Flowers very prolifically too.

The flowers are still going well on Iris 'Kumo-no-Obi', or Obe-Wan Kenobi, as I keep calling it :heehee:
