    The curb.

Although the term usually refers to the art of stopping parallel to a parked car, and then reversing into the space behind it, and ending up parallel to the curb.

Lets be fair now though. In order to get it right, you have to complete let go of the technique that driving instructors teach in order to get you through the test. It was about 3 years and several different vehicles before I finally accepted that what works in a Corsa doesn't work in a much larger car.

Clueless if you can park a Corsa you should with judgement be able to park anything. You can either park a car or you can't. :)

And there lies the problem in the UK ... in order to 'get it right' you have to do tricks that the driving instructors teach you ... which is all a load of hogwash. They don't know how to drive themselves. I admit, having had driving licences from two States, I failed the UK one first time because 'I was too casual with my driving' ... bull's back end!!! I was taught to drive by an ex LeMans driver and an F1 race team Manager. Driving lessons in the UK teach you how to pass the test ... NOT how to drive in inclement weather (be it rain, ice, snow or the sun blinding you), heavy traffic or generally stressful situations.

Thankfully I was not subjected to such.

Depends on the size of the car when bearing in mind the size of the space.
Also the length of the wheel base.

I can now, that's what I'm saying, for probably 3 years after passing my test, I was still trying to apply the techniques that I was taught in the corsa. It was only after a fairly long time I accepted that its never going to work and I should just use my judgement. The first time I hired a van it was a huge long wheel base transit high top. Having never driven anything even close to that big before, I just zipped it straight into a tight space outside our house no messing:)

For those who can't parallel park, you'd better explain why the wheel base isn't the flat bit at the bottom.:dbgrtmb:

Pete it's obvious to most that a huge van isn't going to fit in the space of a Mini. What I mean is, if you are good at parking it doesn't matter about the size of the vehicle, instinct should create the ability to park anything, including a tank on tracks or a four wheel steer vehicle.

I expect its very easy to park a tank. I guess you just decide where you want to put it, and then put it there. It wouldn't matter too much if something was already near the spot or indeed in the spot you wanted:)

I'm with you now. :) When I took my driving test parallel parking wasn't part of it back then, so that was down to my own judgement.

Pete, you really only need a couple of feet front and back to parallel park ... size doesn't matter ... :heehee: It's the skill / expertise that counts ... you should know all about that ... xx

After driving 2 million miles (32YRS) in the company estate cars, working and parking ten times a day in high streets, I could parallel park it, so long as the space was six inches longer than the car. I used to get groups watching and hand claps when I got out (Not a lot goes on in Kirkcaldy) :-)

I tried to get an article in the company magazine of completed 2 million miles, Only they were more concerned about the £225,000 It cost in fuel :-)

I'm rubbish at parallel parking. I'm also rubbish at driving into parking spaces. However, I am dyspraxic which means my spatial awareness isn't great.

I am quite good at reverse parking into spaces because that's my preferred method and I've had lots of practice.
