I asked about that - (can't remember who, sorry!)
They said that the intense heat kills things off. But I must admit I worry about it - particularly nasties like honey fungus. I always burn that sort of stuff - but would people who don't know about it just put it in the brown bins(or green, whatever the local colour is!!) - I think they must do! Just hope the sterilisung idea is right.

Thanks nixon,I'll try it then, it's still cheaper than bought stuff. The other problem for me is that you have to fill your own bag, which I could do without....

mystis if you put the leaves in black bin liners, pour in some water, tie the top and pierce a few holes in they will rot down a lot faster.

Busy day yesterday, turned compost into new bins, a bit wet in the middle so the turn should do it good, also put all the leaves into black sacks as Elainefiz suggested, hopefully some nice leaf-mould in the not too distant. Hubby put in a base for the "monster" ( shredder) to stand on, which we got from ebay and did'nt realise how big it was until our son brought it home and told us that the previous owner was a tree surgon, munches everything in seconds, makes a bit of a racket, but will be great for chopping up rough stuff for compost, mulching, etc.

All shredders make a racket, yours sounds like a good heavy duty one, shouldn't need dismantling every half hour to free blockages as most domestic ones do! Sounds like a good buy, let us know how it goes...

Yes Liz, heavy duty is the word, it's got two chutes one for fine and the other for heavy stuff, have told fellow plot holders to put all surplus waste over our fence, I think we could supply the whole site with mulch with this monster. :D

Sounds like you've really struck gold there, Mistys :D Like Liz says - wuth the average one, you spend so much time unbloking the thing, and letting it cool down, that you wonder why you bother! ;)

Opened up one of our compost bins this evening to empty the kitchen caddy and discovered that the workers in there had been working overtime breeding. THOUSANDS of baby worms were clustered around the top. They were not there yesterday so maybe the increase in temperature today has brought them up. The colony has grown from a handful of fishing worms dumped in the bin two years ago and they chomp through what we put in at an amazing rate.
