    Not totally surprising when you consider the Romans were trading goodies from the Spice Route wherever they colonised.

      'Modern day' curries originated with the Portuguese in Goa. Strangely you see more Chinese restaurants than Indian here ... much to my delight.

        Couldn't think of it a moment ago, but the word Vindaloo comes from the Portuguese Vinho do Alho (wine of garlic).

          The original Portuguese pork dish Vinho do Alho was adopted by the Goanese and called Vindaloo. They also adopted the use of pork, but changed the wine for a touch of vinegar and added spices and potatoes. Unusually for Goanese curries they didn't use coconut milk. As pork is not eaten in a lot of India the other regions adapted it by using chicken.
