@ClematisDbee the Ryobi bigger batteries show you charge state when you press a button. Even my "pattern" (copies) do. 1.5Ah is ok for quick drilling jobs, but for more long term work (eg reciprocating saw, chainsaw, sander), you need 5Ah at least. Yes, charging is slow, so you need multiple batteries.

Higher capacity batteries are heavier, so might be something to take into account.
I get by with 3a/h with makita. But I have 3 so always got at least one fully charged, I rarely run low on just a drill doing jobs around the house.

Thankyou, @infradig, that is a good point. Last Friday was during a cold snap and I had been storing the battery and charger in its plastic case near a draughty open window (for ventilation purposes). It was probably as low as 9°c overnight. I have since tried the battery and charger. The light comes on green, then every so often (maybe 5 or 10 seconds intervals - sorry I did not measure it) the red light briefly flashes on and off and the green light comes on steady again. Not charging the battery though. I have put both near a radiator and re-tested. No joy. Am wondering if either the battery or charger or both got a bit damp at some point.
The battery is 1-3Ah, the stated charging time is one hour. The charger input is 230v, 50 HZ, 55W.

Your charger may have instructions that tell you what that combination of lights means. If it's not normal it normally suggests a faulty battery. If you think it got damp, I'd leave it in the airing cupboard for a day, then try again

Thankyou, @CarolineL and @pete, that is a good point about the battery capacity. I was surprised that my old B&Q drill is only 1.3Ah, but I cannot have used it much at all or put it through its paces. I must be what is called a 'light-user'.
I do have a Bosch hedge trimmer, (which I find very good) with 2 batteries (can't recall the power) and agree, more than one battery is the ideal with most power tools.

Thank you for everyone's really helpful advice. The best deal I could find was with Gtech. Cost slightly over £50 (£56) with free, fast delivery. Have only drilled thick plastic pots so far, but very happy. Battery is 2.5ah. the drill seems solid.
