Quote today from Mark - PM of Welsh Parliament:

“Much as we might want it to, ‘normal’ life will not be possible for many months – possibly years”

Come of Oxford - get that vaccine sorted...

Oxford - you're on the cusp of developing a successful vaccine - keep the pace up...

The new report from Oxford University is based on the vaccination of six rhesus macaques. These monkeys are considered to be good proxies for how drugs could work in people because they share a majority of their genes with humans.

The animals were given half of the dose currently being tested in human. Those trials began on April 24 and include about 1,110 people.

Researchers reported at least some of the monkeys developed antibodies to the virus within 14 days of being vaccinated, and all of the vaccinated animals had evidence of antibodies within 28 days.

What's more, researchers said the vaccine appears to have prevented pneumonia and other lung problems in the animals after they were exposed to the coronavirus.

So far, the Oxford vaccine appears to hold the most promise of becoming the first vaccine to be widely accessible, if proven to work.

Oxford scientists previously said they hope to have enough data to show the vaccine is effective by the beginning of June, and predicted the vaccine could be produced by September.

Poor Monkeys, not sure I agree with testing on animals especially if there is the same trial using human volunteers going on at the same time.

Tesco's 3 items limit on various items is causing me problems building up a stockpile of sugar for this summer's winemaking. Last order included 3 x 1kg, 3 x 2kg and 3 x 5kg, total of 24kg, enough for 24 galls (4 × 6 gall fermenters), but they appear to have sold out of 5kg bags.

Might have to risk actually visiting a shop when the blackberry season arrives :yikes:

That is a good thing - you've got a diesel car! :heehee:

My fuel consumption is now working out at two months to a quarter tank, so that isn't bad  I've had my new car three months next week, and done around 600 miles since buying it.

I was speaking to a colleague today who works in the NHS and he told me that there is talk (in her NHS trust at least) that Covid-19 was around as far back as October last year, even here in the UK, and the Chinese authorities simply didn't tell anyone.

Apparently there has also been noises made that those of us who are on the NHS vulnerable list will remain having to shield until October/November time!

An awful lot of waffle about care homes tonight in the breifing.

I'm concerned that if/when my grandaughter Kat goes back to school she could catch this Virus and bring it home, then it would make me staying in for the past nine weeks pointless.

No, John, your staying in for nine weeks has helped us to get to this point where we are now able to relax some rules gradually. The number of people you have met has drastically reduced meaning that the virus hasn't had a channel to move around. This is your personal contribution in slowing down the infection rate.

Now multiply that impact by 70 million and that's the real effort we have been, and are, making on this island. If we hadn't, your granddaughter would not be able to go back to school and we'd be living in a constant state of fear, a bit like before the invention of antibiotics.

I'm also scared to see what happens when my daughter starts to be allowed more social contacts or if the Uni opens in September. So far we have been cocooned for 9 weeks with my job being location free and her Uni doing the teaching online, food gets delivered and we have just the one outing a day. I do not want this infection, it's so scary to remember the times I had asthma thingies when I was a kid and after some anaesthetics, and even though my daughter is young and healthy it is an atavistic fear to think of the possibility for her to get the virus the hard way.

But the life must open up, carefully. In our house we can work and study from home so that's what we'll do, and keep on washing and being mindful and I guess, wearing masks at some point. And keeping up the good spirits :)
