That was on the way back, after seeking medical advice that he could and was fit to return?

Don't get me wrong, I could understand the outrage if this guy had actually infected others, or there was some sort of tangible effect from his actions, but there aren't - or at least, no more than the actions of the aforementioned Tahir Ali, Stephen Kinnock and others.

I really don't like this 'cancel culture' that we have nowadays - - he/she made a mistake, they must be sacked sort of routine. Sure, some mistakes are just so big that there are no other options, but it is an overused concept as far as I am concerned.

He hasn't actually admitted stopping on the way up then? I wonder why. I find it hard to believe he could have gone 200 odd miles without a toilet or fuel stop especially with children.

Not as far as I know, and whilst I agree, it is not impossible and in the absence of evidence........

I tend to look at things very much as an employer - would I discipline someone for something, would I dismiss them or would I give them a chance, what are the extenuating circumstances and so on - and all of that is evidence based. If I sacked everyone that I didn't agree with, or that did something stupid in their private lives, then I would never have enough staff

We will never know the truth and it's down to how much you trust and believe his stories. To me that tale about going to Barnard Castle is where he blows away any credulity. He was having problems with his vision so to test he could drive OK he packed his wife and kids in the car and drove 30 odd miles. That's against all medical advice and I am speaking as a qualified first aider here, we are trained to never let anyone drive if they had those symptoms, if at work we get a partner to come and pick them up, a taxi if no partner or an ambulance if too bad. He could have killed himself, his family or innocent bystanders. It reveals his true sense of responsibility, i.e. he has none. Either that or a cock and bull story to cover up the fact that he was taking his wife out for a birthday treat whilst everyone else was told to stay at home.

As an aside if people break our health and safety rules at work like that they are escorted off the site, no second chances. I work in an industry that can't afford to employ such dangerous people.

Shopping took a lot longer this morning, I went for a 25 mile drive to see if I was safe to drive :stirpot:, came back to pick up Miss Jiff then went for a drive of 15 miles to go shopping, as a ex lorry driver I new I was safe to drive even before I got into the car but what the hell :)

I wouldn't even get into a car lorry tractor or anything else if I didn't think I was safe to drive

I don't understand going for a drive to see if i'm safe to do so,

I was thinking of going back on the road (HGV) but I would need a medical, so would you think it's ok to go for a drive to see if I was safe to drive?????? and do this every 5 years then every year

Dont forget that nowadays you need a CPC as well, which if my memory serves, has to be renewed with 35 hours training every 5 years. Of course, you could always come here and drive 74 (or is it 76, I forget) tonners. :)

                    From The Guardian:

Many in Italy reacted with a deep sense of outrage. It was as if the “sacrifice” they had made by being first in Europe to fall to the virus had been ignored; it had resulted in no lessons for the UK.

When a lockdown was eventually enforced in the UK, many Italians I spoke to couldn’t understand why we in Britain were allowed to jog, go for a walk or simply leave home without showing papers to the police: “You’re nuts, just stay home!” has been a fairly frequent reaction.

Fairly damning - perhaps rightly - of the UK response. We had an early 'heads up' and didn't take any notice.

I see some shops might be opening next week.
Bearing in mind the rigmarole involved in food shopping is anyone really going to be bothered to go shopping for other stuff.

                      I dont think I will.
