We had four friends round for the day. We were socially distanced at all times although it seemed funny not to hug when meeting.

I went into the village at one stage and the village green had about 100 groups of people picnicking and all were properly socially distanced. The takeaways were doing well (chippy, Indian, Pizza and Kebab) and the Indian restaurant (nothing to do with the takaway) were doing a good trade. One of the pubs was also selling beer from their forecourt - in plastic pint glasses.

Schools must have changed a lot over the years, if I had been told I can't go back to school I'd have been over the moon.:)

Kids seem to actually LIKE going to school these days.
I don't know what the world is coming to.:biggrin:

They even seem to like their teachers, I find that weird.

Well the secondary school I went to had mostly two kinds of teachers, the old ones and the new ones.
The old ones were mostly from the forces in WW2, some had the odd war wound and most were pretty grumpy and regimental.
Then there was the new ones, basically only a few years older than we were and an easy touch.

Yeah, some were ok, but I never took an apple to school for any of them.;)

At least you didn't have a psychotic French teacher who was in the habit of knocking seven bells (literally) out of first-formers she didn't like! Don't think she'd last long nowadays!

Never had a French teacher`, but had a few that like throwing things at you, mostly blackboard rubbers, and a games teacher that like the old slipper.
But mostly, they were the teachers and we were the kids, and it ended there.

Two of my memories from school were getting six of the best, yes with a cane like you see in the old movies ( Whacko!). First time was for not wearing the school cap correctly. The second was for only having one arm through my satchel ! I am sure they would get 10 years for meeting out such punishment these days.

I can remember my very first Teacher at Primary, (Mrs Blanchard), who was just great. All the Teachers I had were really good and some bad reputations but, in fact, turned out to be the best and nothing like their reputation. There was only one bad Teacher (a Mr Tricket) at my later school who, if any one remembers the TV Series "To Serve Them All My Days", was the personification of the really bad 'orrible Head Master they had later in the series.......not a nice man:dunno::nonofinger:

I never was hit by a cane, but the favourite thing of the Teachers was the Strap with cut fronds

They never seemed to hit the hands when you had your hands turned outwards and upwards but instead hit the inside of the wrist, which was even more painful. You didn't seem to have to do much to earn a session.

My school used to give you a "check mark" for every infraction. After 3 in a week, corporal punishment. I never got hit but I knew plenty who did. You'd get a check mark if your shoes weren't shiny, or your nails pristine or your black leotards laundered and lint free. I remember washing my tights every night in the cement laundry sink in the cellar and hoping they would dry overnight and not be wet, or in winter hold enough dampness to freeze on the next morning's walk to school. Wringing repeatedly became a desperate effort to be comfortable.

I had one really great math teacher in grade 5 who gave me the key to making sense of numbers/logical thinking and another who fired up my interest in reading.

Those two were responsible for my desire to learn. :love30:

The Isle of Man returns to normal on Monday. People back to work and children back to school with no restrictions.
