    There's another way.

    1) Check out the number of deaths in your area Deaths involving COVID-19 - Interactive map - Office for National Statistics

    2) Then multiply by 1.2 to include the undereported 'excess deaths'.

    3) Then believe the government's advisors average death rate of 0.75%, and multiply by 133

    4) Then google the populaion in your area and calculate % infected.

For my area it's 0.27% up to May, of which some will have died, others recovered, and others become infected. As there' 2,000 in my parish, about 5 may be infected and there's only 2 pubs and lots of passing trade in them (previously), plus shop and post office.

If you believe the stupidly low death rates some people are suggesting online, then based on the number of deaths in my locality, everybody has caught it at least once.

Ashford Common, overall 7 deaths (1 March, 6 April)

        7 x 1.2 = 8.4 x 133 = 1172 cases

        Area pop. 27382

so 1172 cases is 0.04% of the local population that has had it for this entire time, and the percentage of population deaths is so small (something like 0.0003% of the population).

Sorry, but again why are we killing our world?

Unless you live near a food processing plant in Merthyr Tydfil, Wrexham or on the Isle of Anglesey

Which comes back to the point that I think @pete or @clanless made the other day - there seems to be a hell of a lot of this around food processing plants. Now either their hygiene is really poor (and that in itself is a worry), or there is a link to the food chain, and in particular I suspect poultry has a part to play given the problems in Germany.

Bird flu, swine fever, all connected with meat.
But they were saying the virus likes cold conditions this morning on TV.
                And these places are cold.
They then went on to say there was a big upsurge in cases in parts of the USA,
Arizona and Texas were both mentioned.
And what do they use this time of year most?

Aircon, its bloody freezing in most of their places at this time of the year, at least it used to be, cant think its changed.

I'm thinking that our countries are still on alert is perhaps because in the beginning we were all horrified by the sheer numbers in China. But we didn't know that they had tried to sweep it under the rug at first making their situation more dire and let's face, their population is humongous compared to most of us here.

The numbers coming out of China a few months back certainly made my hair stand on end. And we were questioning whether these numbers were even an accurate representation of what was actually going on. Thought it was several times worse.

And I think that most of us can thank our countrys' immediate stance on how to repel this pandemic. Canada was a little slow closing the border but once they did, the numbers seemed to become manageable.

I'm still cautious but know the risks of transmission in my area and consider them low.

Or, possibly, the close proximity that the workers have to work in - but I don't know! does anyone else know?

There are a lot more industries where people have to work in close proximity to each other without the incidence seen in the food processing industry. It could of course be argued that those industries have been closed, but the return to that one is that all of the printed material telling us how to stand, how to breathe etc didn't make itself!

I used to work in a place that sometimes had agency workers sweeping up or doing unskilled jobs.
They actually liked working where I was, they all said it was much better than the Pie factory.
Apparently they used to get sent to various places and the Pie factory was not the place to go.
It was a pretty disgusting place to work, meat on the floor and blood and guts all around, that was what they said, I never saw the place.

Saw something on the TV where they explained why they thought that meat processing plants were riddled with Covid-19. Because they are cold and people work closely together.

I would have thought that meat processing plants would be shot hot when it comes to hygiene - so I'm not convinced of the brainiacs explanation.

Chicken is off the menu for the time being.

The food factories that have got CV19 process much more than chicken - including biscuits, buns and pizzas. One of the companies has 20,000 employees spread across all its processing plants. :rolleyespink:

Easier to track virus on Anglesey due to workers sharing houses of multiple occupation

‘End shocking treatment for migrant staff’

Many of the low paid staff live together in places of multiple occupation, travel to work together, do not have English as their first language and have trouble with understanding instructions (Unite say that), are low paid and do not get sick pay so may be inclined to come into work when unwell (that's from Unite again).

What concerns me is that these places getting shut down will cause a shortage of vegetarian products in the shops (although I have 2 freezers full of vegetarian Quorn products sold reduced to clear at 10p each when they were changed to a vegan recipe).
