Covid-19 is a follow-on of the Sars virus, according to scientists. I have to admit. I have little recollection of Sars. Then in the last quarter of 2019 this Covid-19 hit the world's populace. As so often happens, the governments of the world assumed charge, and consequently took charge. We are well aware of how this has panned out. Accusations that China caused this dreaded vital plague. This I believe is US. President Trump's suggestion.

Governments are being accused of acting too slow and all manner of things. Truth is. This is a new virus, that has hit the whole world. Perhaps we have been spared mass hysteria etc due to the suddeness and the sad loss of lives. IMO. This learn as you go policy has had it's highs and lows, but those taking the lead have and are trying to act sensibly.

Wearing of face masks. This is not a new thing. For years now, especially in China, the air quality is so polluted, that the population have become accustomed to wearing masks, to reduce the level of intake of harmful fumes, gases air and whatever. So what is wrong with people today. There is no lack of warnings. I remember the wartime when people were issued with gas masks. At least a basic face mask is so much simpler. The purpose remains the same. To protect yourself and with this virus, to protect others from the transmission of the viral germs. Sad to say. Many of todays folk have never faced such a devastating outbreak before. The chance to perhaps protect oneself is there. TAKE IT.

On the outbreak of the Second world war the government decided to issue a gas mask to everyone living in Britain. Over the next few weeks 38 million gas masks were distributed to regional centres. The government also issued a warning that people must go to their nearest air raid shelter during bombing attacks: "If poison gas has been used, you will be warned by means of hand rattles. If you hear hand rattles do not leave your shelter until the poison gas has been cleared away. Hand bells will tell you when there is no longer any danger from poison gas.

A lady remarked that she had spoken to her local Councillor and her next-door neighbour, and he had told her in confidence that the first consignment of gas masks due to be delivered the following week would be far from adequate and it was a question of distribution. Whoever got there first would be lucky. She was right about the gas masks, and several weeks later there was a mad panic for these frightful looking things at local school rooms, where they were being distributed. People reacted in the most uncivilised way because they were so certain that poison gas would be used by the Germans and there were not enough gas masks issued on that first delivery.

People were encouraged to wear gas-masks for 15 minutes a day to get used to the experience. The government threatened to punish people for not carrying gas masks. However, legislation was never passed to make it illegal. The government published posters that said: "Hitler will send no warning - so always carry your gas mask". Government advertisements appeared in newspapers pleading with people to carry their gas masks with them at all times. Teachers were instructed to send children back home to fetch their masks if they had forgotten them. Entry was occasionally refused to restaurants, or places of entertainment, to patrons who were without their survival kit. John Lewis the department store, reminded staff that "those who come without their gas mask must not be surprised if they are dismissed as unsuitable in time of war".

Gas masks were neither easy nor comfortable to wear. The gas-like odour of rubber and disinfectant made many people feel sick. Although I could breathe in it. I felt as if I couldn't. It didn't seem possible that enough air was coming through the filter. The covering over my face, the cloudy Perspex in front of my eyes, and the overpowering smell of rubber, made me feel slightly panicky, though I still laughed each time I breathed out, and the edges of the mask blew a gentle raspberry against my cheeks. The moment you put it on, the window misted up, blinding you. Our mums were told to rub soap on the inside of the window, to prevent this. It made it harder to see than ever, and you got soap in your eyes. There was a rubber washer under your chin, that flipped up and hit you, every time you breathed in... The bottom of the mask soon filled up with spit, and your face got so hot and sweaty you could have screamed."

And I don't think after a while many people carried on wearing them.
I can remember my mum saying that they had an air raid shelter in the garden, they used it for a while when the raids first started but after a while they decided if they get bombed they were going to die anyway, so sat under the stairs.
People all have their own approach to danger.

I think that would very much depend on the role that they are doing - Mrs C works in retail, but does not stand/sit behind a till and is more often than not running about like Lynford Christie carting stock through a multi-level store that has a lift that is out of action more than it is in it. It is all well and good being hot and bothered for an hour or so when you are doing a bit of shopping, but eight hours a day and then public transport to and from work is a problem for some.

For me personally, I will rarely go out now to ensure that mask use is of an absolute last resort.

                      Hello all

                      I hope you are well.

It seems that the abuse of those unable to wear a face covering has already started.

There was a report of a woman on Public Transport being verbally abused by another passenger for not wearing a face covering even though the woman was exempt,

The Government has completely mishandled this situation as they always state that 'Everyone' needs to wear a face covering on Public Transport and now also in Shops etc. and those that do not face a fine of up to £100.

They never report the situation regarding exemptions and because of that Disability Rights UK have now got involved.

Personally, I am writing off the remainder of this year and am not going out unless absolutely necessary, i.e. B12 Injection every two months, now due again in September for fear of abuse or confrontation since I too am exempt.

                      Thanks

                      Kevin

When i used to do dock running with the lorry we had one product (rice bran) which had to be transported from ship to shed, the shed covered 8 acre's and the only way you could even see another vehicle or loading shovel was by the little glows of there lights, the dust was so bad it made it's way into sealed lights and we spent 15 hours a day and 7 days a week for a month and all we we aloud was 1 mask per day, in the end we used to gets some masks off the dockers which had lots because of the job

                        Just to add
Also the animal feed could be gased as well to kill bad infestion of bugs, so we look for the sign's, which would be the ships hatches would be open when coming into the port (venting the heavy gases)

The fact that it is not enforceable is being placed on the public.;)
The idea that the mask is not for YOUR benefit, (it wont stop you catching it), but that it is to stop YOU spreading it to others is the propaganda being spewed out by government.

Reason being that way others will come down on you if you are not wearing one.

This is obviously true, as all hospital staff wear masks so they DONT pass it on to their patients, yeah.

I take a lot of what President Trump says with a pinch of salt @Mike Allen. On the other hand it does seem that a number of diseases start in and come from China. Just recently there has been an out break of swine flu there, also a case of Bubonic plague. I think it's about time China cleaned up its act and not only pollution.

We went out yesterday to a shop. Mrs Shiney found the mask uncomfortable and claustrophobic whereas I didn't really notice much difference. So i shall be doing all the shopping. :noidea:
