The irrational paranoia over the EU does my head in. The ultimate arbitor of the WAB on the island of Ireland is the peace process itself. The EU will not rock the boat over there because the ROI is an EU member and the peace process is too important to them. I'm afraid that this latest bill is just another power grab by CoCo and Cummings adding as it does even more executive powers to Secretary of State (in addition to the ones that were handed out in the WAB). I admit that I have yet to read the proposed bill but it looks unlikely to get through the House of Lords anyway and there is a slim chance that it may not even clear the commons.

That is a highly probable scenario. One that will fail as the US congress is up in arms over it and have made their position clear.

Yes, on the Today program for one.

No chance. They are in a state of panic based on public opinion.

There is a lot of pie in the sky at No.10. The latest is ten million tests a day when they cannot even keep up with 300000 a day.

I can see the riots coming before the end of this year. As Simon said, three monts is a long time.

It is. As I've said, I am angry over this because we have done massive damage to our young peoples futures in order to protect us wrinklies and to cover the shortcomings in our NHS system (not staff) as it was (and will be once the cutbacks kick in).

Although I admit the government are in total chaos my remark about needing an aim is really directed at the world, the WHO needs to come up with an aim.
What is going on around the world is a never ending process.

          Everything's gonna be alright
          Everything's gonna be alright
And nobody's gotta worry 'bout nothing
Don't go hittin' that panic button

I think what they're banking on is that workplaces have to be certified as covid-secure, after fairly rigorous conditions have been met. Your home isn't subject to such restrictions.

Because it takes time to prepare and pass a Bill in Parliament.

                  Thanks for this dear Friend,
you made me sing and think of permed hair and carrot jeans :)

It has been a bit black few days, the concerns and sorrows are lifting their heads especially thinking of the young ones. My child has missed a great part of the social swing of the first year at Uni, faced fears her age should not be facing and spent countless minutes, hours, days, weeks alone.

But it'll be alright, we are in no imminent danger, have great healthcare and solid income, we haven't lost anyone and even though the plans have somewhat changed, we'll be alright.

What a journey to go through though. Now it's time to be sensible, adjust, adapt and accept. And plant spring bulbs. :)

This is just what I'm not grasping, the government have to pass a bill because there are those in this country that have to be instructed on what they should and shouldn't do.It's a sorry state of affairs when folk can't use a bit of common sense .There's no bladdy wonder this country is on it sodding knees.

Ahh well that would be "covid safe" grouse shooting and hunting.
As usual laws only apply to the small person, if you have pots of money and can make the so called precautions it wont apply.

Yes, there is a lot of knee-jerk EU-scepticism (I've just written an article about this in the context of the current fracas) but having been on either side of this issue, I'm a neutral ("nEUtral"?) and can genuinely see the good and bad in the EU, and I don't dismiss all fears as irrational. Their treatment of Greece c. 2012-25 is a memory that will never leave me, and I've encountered many examples of EU intransigence that has caused real, in some cases life threatening, human suffering. Any large, powerful block (and yes this includes the UK government) is going to be a potential threat to individual freedoms and the most vulnerable. Its also worth remembering many of the most powerful positions within the EU changed hands in the last 12 months, they are an evolving entity and we can't be sure yet in precisely which ideological direction(s) the present incumbents will shape things. There was a massive difference, for example, between the principle philosophies of the then-EC in the 70's and 80's, and the Maastricht era under Jacques Delors, not to mention the changes that took place more recently under messrs Juncker, Tusk et al. The present imbroglio sees them effectively pretending not to know the UK's food standards, when these standards are the EU's own, and to quote David Frost, "Any changes in future would be notified to the WTO and EU in the usual way with plenty of lead time. The EU lists dozens of countries globally on precisely this basis, without any sort of commitment about the future."
For me the bigger point in all of this is just how unedifying it is to continually see our representatives, and their's, playing endless games and catching one another out, against the backdrop of Covid. These political games may have been the normal way of things at one time, but none of saw this pandemic coming and it has changed the world. Our tussles with Brussels just seems a First World Problem now, and I think most people are getting past caring about these tedious legal disputes and have stopped taking sides as such - we see a global pandemic taking its toll (and destined to require far more of our politicians' time and energy as we go forward) and find it embarrassing that highly paid "negotiators" are wasting valuable time fratching about the price of fish, they need to stop the squabbling, strike a compromise and move on, or else just scrap the whole thing.
