On a more serious note, for some people, Covid is now going to affect your pocket even more. Even if you pay for subscription sport TV they are talking about charging a per match fee on top of it for football. The suggested price for big matches is £15 (on the news this morning).

It won't affect me as I don't watch sport . I wouldn't even know one end of a ball from the other.

 

Sorry, bad maths - however, take a long hard look at what you have written.... 0.11% of the population have Covid. 0.11% and that is the hotspot of the capital which they are talking about imposing restrictions on.

Factor in masks, social distancing and of course the probability that you will actually meet that 1 person in every 1000..... Given those factors and probabilities, one also has to ask how the virus is spreading?

Of that 1000 people in the high street, how many are carrying a knife or a gun? How many are likely to smack you over the head for your phone/wallet? How many have terminal cancer and don't know it yet? How many have terminal cancer and do know it but can't get treatment?

Life is a risk. I'd suggest you are more at risk of falling down stairs than you are of catching Covid, yet here we are watching our economy be destroyed and people put out of work (and potentially onto the streets) because of restrictions that our government are forcing upon us.

What we don't know is demographics, it may be that the group of people who go shopping are much more likely to be Covid positive than say over 65s like me, who don't need to work, shop for everything online, hardly socialise and therefore not meeting others in any situation. I suspect this is true given that death rates are comparatively low compared to the first wave. My feeling is the virus is being spread by younger people many of whom don't show symptoms and as such don't get tested. During the first wave I recall we were told that infections were probably 10 times higher than the number of confirmed cases. So that would skew the likely chances of passing someone in the high street by 10 or 20 fold.

The only place I miss going out to is the pub, some of them are pretty crowded. The Wetherspoons here in Guildford is big and holds several hundred people, I know this is an extreme example, there could possibly be 10 or 20 people in there drinking who don't know they have the virus and spreading it to others.

At the youngest end of the age spectrum are schoolchildren who might be spreading it. Going by my grandchildren's experience: one Junior school year was sent home for two weeks because a single child tested positive. At my eldest granddaughter's school two children tested positive in her year this week, but not in her tutor group, so my granddaughter is still attending. Those 2 children roughly equate to the rate of infections in Guildford at 65 per 100,000. But both my granddaughters have coughs and one is too unwell to go. Maybe they have the virus but mild symptoms?

The point I'm making is that many younger folk are probably behind the spread of the virus but are going unrecorded because it hardly affects them.

 

Good morning @shiney and thanks for the heads up my friend I have just cancelled my sky sports ,I was paying £31 .50p per month the young lady did offer me a £9 a month discount for 18 months but I politely declined the offer

 

Contrarily I think this will save fans a fair bit of money given that season tickets are several hundred pounds. I don't go often but the last time I went to a game it cost me about £50 for the ticket plus travel expenses etc.

 

@JWK - demographics may well be a factor, however the fact remains that we are going to have severe restrictions imposed because 0.11% of the population have a virus; of that 0.11%, what percentage will be hospitalised (10%?), and of those hospitalised how many will it be fatal for? If we are looking at a mortality rate in hospital even as high as 50%, that still means that we are doing what we are doing for an overall mortality rate of 0.05% of the population. The fact that we are putting 30% of the population into debt, poverty and health issues for decades to come seems to be escaping people.

 

It isn't - I have friends who are bouncing off the walls at this decision; they are still paying by direct debit for a season ticket, paying for BT Sports, Sky Sports and Amazon Prime and are now being asked to pay £15 per match.

I couldn't give two hoots myself as I don't have any interest in football.

 

Going to the bridge club (old man's game ) used to cost me £2 a time. I've now helped set up five online clubs and it cost $3 a time. Hosted on a U.S. site as it's the only one that can cope with the volume as it can have up to 70,000 people using it at a time.

 

Our nephew had Covid, quite badly, for three months. He, fortunately, didn't need hospital treatment but was unable to work for the whole of the three months. He now has continual aches and other problems and has had a scan showing some internal damage - mainly in the stomach and bowel area. They're still thinking about what can be done about it.
