Local infections reduced by 12% last week. If that rate of decline continues for a little over 6 months, Covid-19 will have almost disappeared around here.

 

The Welsh Old Bill have washed their hands of policing the English virus spreaders - pun intended. It's down to the English Police to tell people off.

 

I just don't eat or wear any animal. However, I think hypocrisy gets a bad rap on these things. Everyone is hypocritical to some extent - its part of being human, very, very few people manage to embody 100% of their professed ethics to the nth degree. Equally, many people probably have their reasons for making the moral calculations that they have. For instance, you point out above that you don't use products tested on animals, but maybe you eat meat?

Personally I think the issue with mink coats/fur is the specific way they are bred and killed - its absolutely barbaric.

 

So sorry to hear this Mike. It is terrible misfortune that all this coincided with covid. My mother is in a similar position, though in her case she is actually an inpatient - but we cannot visit. So many people are suffering during this wretched pandemic in ways other than directly with covid, people like yourself who have to contend with the knock-on effects. Wishing you all the best.

 

One interesting observation re mink coats - you are quite likely to find meat eaters who oppose fur. Very likely to find vegetarians/vegans who oppose fur. But it is virtually implausible that you would find someone who approves of the fur industry but disapproves of eating meat (unless the disapproval is on health grounds only). Seems to suggest a strong correlation between shunning one form of animal cruelty and shunning others, and that if more people shunned meat, it would logically mean more people shunning fur.

 

I'm with Nicola Sturgeon on this one (and it isn't often I say that) - Santa is a key Worker and is down for his usual shift on December 24th!

 

Back in October our Local Authority put up signs telling residents not to mix indoors with other households which was incorrect as we were in Tier 1 and that was permitted here.

On Wednesday, the day before Lockdown 2, they were still puttinh up more of exactly the same signs which also tell residents to comply with the Rule of Six, which is now illegal.

Useless. Will we now have to pay for them to all be replaced, or will they have furloughed their staff?

 

The thing to realize is that the council will not perceive the above as "wrong." It will just be another procedural exercise. It is part and parcel of local authority culture to waste masses of time on erroneous things while the real issue speeds on, getting worse and worse. There will have been hours of meetings leading to the signs, and more meetings to debate how to take down and replace them, and if they are still debating it by December 2nd it will not occur to anyone that this has missed the entire point of the period - rather they will feel it has been time well spent on having important discussions. Someone somewhere within the higher echelons of your local council will no doubt be able to point out that putting up the wrong signs, giving people illegal and potentially life-threatening advice, fulfilled the requirements of subsection 3, paragraph 6. Even if half your town dropped dead, this would present nothing but a logistical challenge, and an opportunity for testing out some new administrative system, and of course more meetings. I am aware of one council that have spent the entire period leading up to this second lockdown failing to update any of their advice, but focusing instead on protracted hand-wringing and lengthy meetings about which of their services should be exempt from the restrictions, their public communications almost seeming to suggest covid is already a thing of the past. I've seen more evidence of this sort of thing nationwide.

 

Along with all the input from their Propaganda Marketing & Information Department who's team will have been heavily involved in the design of the signs and ensuring the Council's logo is correctly positioned, etc., drafting press releases for the Cabinet Member responsible, and writing of glowing reports for inclusion in the Council's 'free' magazine describing what a wonderful job they've done.

 

The idiot cyclists were back out in force again today, cycling on the footpaths and expecting pedestrians to get out their way by jumping into the road.

Mrs Scrungee held her ground and 4 cyclists in 2 incidents crashed in the space of 30 mins.

 

A very good post, I think. Probably worthy of a thread in itself. I too think that the rearing of animals just for their skins/fur is barbaric. I’m a meat eater, always have been. I’ve seen some of the images, some of the conditions. Only a few weeks ago I saw a cattle truck on the road right next to me. There was only one place they were going. So yes, I must admit that sometimes I do struggle with the whole concept of eating meat (animals). I do try to substitute where I can (Lasagne/Bolognese 50/50 lentils and mince, for instance) but ultimately, there’s nothing quite like meat. Looking ahead, from what I understand, continuing eating meat is increasingly unsustainable, so maybe we will be forced to look elsewhere.

 

I just watched a clip on You Tube. On the continent Mink are a big thing. It has now been found that these animals have caught the Covid virus from humans. Now, thousands of these creatures are being gassed.

I used to breed ferrets. They can give you a nasty bite, but they are also great pets and very playful. Their eyesight is very poor so they depend so much on scent. Yes I have worked my tribe. A mate who was a tree surgeon, fell on hard times. Doing some treework at a place, the owners asked if he could get rid of the rabbits in the grounds. Between us, we stocked his freezer. I don't agree with hunting, killing for sport.

 

I think continuing to eat any thing will become unsustainable if we carry on the way we are.
