He said to leave hand gel for Father Christmas by the cookies. Grrrrrr. What happened to mince pies and that good old traditional British drink, sherry?

Boris = Trump-lite. I was watching a thingy last night on tv, about how the virus started and how it spread. They showed some footage of Boris proudly stating that he had “shook everyone’s hand” at some hospital. This was in early March, when SAGE had already warned against it.

They were warned before the Cheltenham Festival and still allowed that to go ahead. I still say that they should have stopped absolutely everything way back then (and I do mean everything) and maybe the picture would be wholly different than it is now.

I had a conversation with my daughter's college today, during which the tutor admitted that there had been around 30 positive cases on their site. I asked at what point they were going to inform me or my daughter given the inherent risk to me if she were to bring it home with her - apparently, there is a portal on their website that shows numbers, but not when and on which site (they have three) so it is about as much good as a chocolate teapot before we even get to the fact that it is wholly reliant on people knowing about the portal and actually remembering to look at it.

I mentioned this earlier in the thread. At the time, to me it was plainly obvious it (Cheltenham) shouldn’t go ahead. I couldn’t and still don’t know how they could possibly think it was anything other than foolhardy. I kind of agree about shutting everything down, it certainly would have helped damp down the virus, but food retailers too? I wouldn’t normally stick up for the government, especially a Tory one, but I guess (as I’ve said before) they were trying to walk a tightrope, and no matter what they did, they’d be on a hiding to nothing. To be fair, when one looks across Europe (for instance), none have done particularly well in managing it. I imagine they (the gov) were hoping that folks follow the basic guidance, and I believe in the first lockdown, largely they did. Since then, it’s all gone to pot with a significant minority (?) not bothering, we’ve all seen it. I notice that government spokesmen are reluctant to lay any blame with regards to some members of the public breaking the rules, keen to say how well the public have supported all this. They must be biting their tongues, I don’t think I could.
Put ‘humans’ at the helm, and it’s bound to go pear-shaped. The mind boggles when it comes to obvious oversights. I saw it many times when I was at work, but that wasn’t a matter of life and death. I guess it just highlights the need to be vigilant and not depend on others to be ‘up to speed’, infuriating though it is.
The one thing I’ve learned through all this, is to assume nothing when it comes to transmission. Hopefully when the vaccine comes along, C19 will be nothing more than a talking point to reflect on in the future :fingers crossed:

I'd go further and say that our respective governments should have been much more strict about stopping cross border travel. Even now, when the UK figures are horrendous and France is struggling to get things under control, there are literally hundreds of stupid (or incredibly arrogant) , blinkered people whose only concern is to carry on flitting between countries. We have a second wave now as a direct result of the relaxing of lockdown measures during the holiday/tourist season. And now there are the same selfish idiots just champing at the bit to get to UK for Christmas, or have their families come over here. With all the modern technology available for keeping in real-time touch with people all over the world, is it really such hardship to stay put?

I agree. I think that in future, proof of inoculation should be a requirement for those that want to travel abroad, except for those that for whatever reason, aren’t able to take it up.

Fortunately, so far, the anti-Covid vaccine hasn't proved to be disadvantageous to the elderly. Yellow Fever vaccine is not recommended for the over 60's. I think that is because of what they grow the active ingredient in. :noidea:

Well, there's over a million Americans on the move by air or car to get to their families for Thanks Giving, despite nearly 260,000 of them dead from COVID 19 and the CDC's and States warnings about it causing a future huge wave of Death.

Agreed, Freddy, but I really don't think it's the Government's oversights that's the cause of where we are now, or that this or that restriction is "complicated" or doesn't make sense in one area and does in another, it's the fact that the some of the ordinary person on the Street will always decide to flout the rules because there's no such thing as Covid19, they can't catch it, and besides Rules don't apply to them. We can blame the Government for sure, but they ain't the problem the ones that do, and will continue to do so, hold House Parties, don't wear Masks, infect other people without caring, are the problem.

Theoretically it's a great idea, but how do you enforce it? You can put out a dictate for a complete National Shut Down and people will, and will have to, ignore it. So, what do you do?, put the Army on the Streets?, and how do they enforce it?, Shoot to Kill?, lock the offenders up and put them where?, Internment Camps?? How do you get food, medicines and other supplies to those who will need it? Does the NHS shut down as well?, after all it is a complete shut down. What about the OAP's?, Disabled?, people with serious conditions living at Home ? those that have Heart Attacks?, Cancer?, Strokes?, etc, survive........to have a complete shut down you would have to ignore them:dunno: There is no way on Earth that the UK, or any other Country, could impose a total shut down without the use of Force of some sort and a huge loss of Life of the vulnerable who need outside care and help. So a total shut down sounds really good, as does a lot of Politicians solutions, but it's totally impractical unless we become like a WWII Fascist State. People are ignoring the sensible restrictions now by the Thousands so what would change Human behaviour with the imposition of a complete National Shut down?

Some members of the public have, IMO been complete selfish £$%&*()"+ and they won't be the ones to catch anything.

I was referring to FC’s instance with the college, not the government. I’ve always held the view that folks are basically their own worst enemies (I’m generalising). Unfortunately we have the likes of the following to contend with...

Actually, Freddy, I wasn't referring to anything you had posted.:dunno: I was just trying to point out that if we can't even enforce the present restrictions due to Human idiocy then a total/complete National Shutdown would be a complete failure unless we used unacceptable methods to impose it.:coffee:
