I had the very same words thrown at me, yet my wife was a Thai national before being granted citizenship. For our country to take in more migrants, our whole infrastructure needs to grow at the same speed, well the growing of our infrastructure gives watching paint dry a whole new meaning.

There are many sectors in the UK where we are struggling to recruit, the whole problem with having free movement, it doesn't address why. The NHS has been struggling to recruit and retain staff for years, hiring more staff from Europe and beyond will never solve the root cause of the problem.

I have to agree with Fat Controller´s feelings here.
We certainly live in “Interesting Times,” although I think my span - ´49 to present, has been relatively placid when compared to the wider backdrop of history.
I´ve long been fascinated by the rise and fall of civilisations, and set against their example, the present fate of the UK and USA would appear to follow the usual pattern of collapse at their zenith.
When the “Public Servants” wear riot gear, surely it´s time to take notice.
I used to mope about the destruction of the library at Alexandria, and mourn the loss of the civilisations which produced the Antikythera mechanism, the Egyptian Stone Vases and the Rig Vedas — but now I think I might as well worry about the fate of the leaves which tumble every autumn. History is a juggernaut which rumbles ever onwards and I´m hoping to watch from a safe intellectual position, (here in the mountains), I´d rather not get emotionally involved.

Maybe I have been in different hospitals, but before this covid started I've never seen hospital staff run off their feet in anything other than casualty departments.

I can remember one nurse saying, during covid, that she was struggling to make ends meet because she had been moved onto a covid ward, which meant she couldn't do overtime in other departments. This meant her hours had been cut from what she was used to.
Whatever that was.

I dont know what the basic pay is but I think it is more than I was earning, although I dont mind that, they deserve it.
But some bloke was saying on the news the other morning.
"take a normal family, both earning £29000 a year," its a struggle for them.

With respect FC, you probably live in one of the priciest areas of the country.
I dont think its usually taken in to account, but I remember my brother in law saying once, he worked for the gas company, that the salaries were the same all over the country, so if you lived in the SE you had a lower standard of living than others in less affluent areas.

Things are not always great down south.

This is also the case with the NHS and teachers, admittedly there are London weightings. This has led some areas to argue for local pay settlements based on the average wages in the that area.
Here in the South West house prices and rental costs are a big problem. My younger colleagues really struggle; firstly to find affordable accommodation to rent and secondly to get a foot on the housing ladder. These people are on above average incomes for the area.
The problem is exacerbated by second home owning, properties used for holiday rentals and people selling up in the more affluent areas of the country and retiring down here.
In Paignton even the Charity shops are closing due to lack of business.

 

About a month ago a lot of staff (shops, banks etc) were in a bit of a huff about things may be change's to working hours? anyway i was in a shop and couldn't find something (been moved) so i ask a staff member, well they snaped my head off, then there was a voice on the specker saying "please be kind to our staff" so i shouted out "respect works both ways" just so that that menber of staff would hear

Out here in the countryside things have changed bit time, no more rushing about like headless chickens, still no respect but things are more relaxed

 

With interest rates as they are, you can understand why. Low interest rates has also contributed to fuel the housing boom, while savers suffer.
