I think we have all got used to the idea that every virus must have a vaccine, since they started doing it with flu.
I have no idea of the numbers involved who die of flu, in a bad year, mostly because they dont make it public on the news every day.
I'm thinking that the time they sort out a vaccine to this one it will have mutated and we will need another different one next year.

Although I'm not as old as some on here I still think I'm at risk, but unless you have some underlying problem you should be able to go about your daily business and not expected to hide away.
I might get flu anyway, never had a jab, and it might finish me off.

I think the yearly Flu jab only covers around 3 of the more than 38 different strains of Flu, so there is still no effective to answer to Flu and we are still losing people of all ages and conditions to it. So, a vaccine for the Coronavirus will still not be the "Silver Bullet". Manufacture of it will take at least a couple of years and then even more time as there will have to be enough to give to the Billions in the world and, probably, even in ten years time not all of those will have had the vaccine.:wallbanging::dunno::cat-kittyandsmiley::coffee:

I see his point @Jenny namaste - not entirely sure I agree with it however. As you know, given my past, I am highly at risk from this virus; were I to get it, it would likely see me off, and at 44 years old I am hopeful that I won't be shuffling off due to something else anytime soon.

Yes, there does need to be some perspective in all this - the flu takes many more than have died so far; however, the key there is 'so far' - I think the problem is that this virus is a bit of an unknown, not just in it's current form, but they also don't know how it may mutate.

The other risk is not from the virus itself - yes, 250,000 may well die and that is less than 1% of the population, but that figure would wholly overwhelm our NHS and other services (burial/cremation etc) - the steps being taken are to try and smooth that spike and spread it out over a longer period of time.

I have had cancer twice ... once in my 30s in the UK and again in my 60s here in Portugal. UK I paid privately, here SNS/NHS. That's life ... I cannot pass it on to anyone. I could however pass Coronavirus on should I unfortunately contract it. I think we are talking chalk and cheese here.

I think it is a very dangerous premise as it says that the value of a life is unequal simply on the basis of age. It is not proposing any other parameters - not that I'm suggesting that there are other parameters that predicate that a person is not of equal value under any circumstances.

There are plenty of reasons people could pick for why some people should not be valued. Hitler is a salutary example. The KKK is another. There are numerous groups of people that think they know best

There have been many books written and films made that dramatise these situations.

'Make Room! Make Room' a 1966 book by Harry Harrison and turned into a film called 'Soylent Green' in 1973.

The film is only loosely based on the book but older people were being persuaded to have voluntary euthenasia and were then being turned into food! Charlton Heston and Edward G Robinson starred in it.

'Logan's Run' a 1967 book by William F Nolan and the 1976 film of the same name was about people being killed when they reached a certain age - 21 in the book and 30 in the film. Michael York and Jenny Agutter starred in the film.

                Both films won awards.

There are many other books based on removing sectors of the population for one reason or another or valuing them differently!

Slavery and Hitler's Lebensraum are just two.

I apologise for all this but was just trying to answer Jenny's question. I don't think it is really a topic for discussion. :noidea:

Our lane has never been so busy!! Walkers, family groups with kids on bikes/ scooters, joggers, serious cyclists in Lycra, more horse riders that is usual , elderly couples going for a stroll..not forgetting the dogs taking their humans out too. There were we feeling a tad smug at living in a fairly remote area but now...:yikes:

The flu jab covers 3 or 4 varieties, part of the problem is that they have to predict in the spring which 3 or 4 strains to go in the vaccine; as it takes 6months or so to produce sufficient vaccine. Some years they get it right other years are less right.
A corona virus vaccine will take at least 6 months to develop and then have to be scaled up. They are currently starting first trials of some possible vaccines; these are essentially safety trials on healthy people to see if there are serious adverse effects.
I disagree with Mr Davies as no one knows who will get a serious case and who will just shrug it off. The whole population is at risk from this virus not just the 1% he states as being at risk fatalities will be skewed towards the elderly and the less well, but there will be fatalities throughout the population. See figures from Italy.
From what I have heard on the radio etc treatment will be based on whether the patient will benefit from it and yes hard decisions will have to be made and I don't envy those having to make them.

Let me see if I understand this. If a vaccine can be produced to battle this virus, then would there not then be a new yearly jab produced with possible mutations in mind, the same as the flu?
