The doctor that discovered the variant has openly said that she does not understand the panic as the variant is so mild. Numerous commentators in the media have said that there has been no deaths caused by this variant. If you are aware of any deaths caused by this variant (and not someone being hit by a bus and found to have it in the morgue), I'd be grateful for the info.

So many lies have been told now, I believe none of it.

Can we rename this thread as "Panic Central ", some posts are a little alarmist.

@HarryS I enjoyed your take on the alarmist pointing finger irony.

I can assure you that Omicron hasn't got me yet.. or maybe I've already had the gentle version of the intruder.

Everyone over here is still wearing masks indoors whilst out in public facilities and I honestly feel that I would suffer more from hosting the flu than omi. And with a mask, I probably won't get either. I'm not minimizing the horrible things the original Covid moments were and how many died.

But we no longer have genuine News on television because it is now the Covid Conversation Spin Channels.

On the positive side, it gives me lots of time to go and powder my nose or whatever, in between the weather reports :heehee:

South Africa have reported a sharp increase in cases, which is mainly the omicron variant. Even WHO was reported as saying, that even though early reports show the new variant to be more transmissible, it is still plausible that relaxation of social measures and enhanced testing since omicron was first identified will play a role in case numbers increasing. Plus, South Africa has had a low uptake in vaccinations, only 38% of the adult population has been fully vaccinated.

Yet, even though there has been an increase in hospitalisation, early evidence suggests that patients are experiencing far milder symptoms and illnesses compared to previous waves.

South Africa says no signal of increased Omicron severity yet | Reuters

Present and past governments never state true figures. When you have a rapidly growing population, its inevitable it would bring our current infrastructure to its knees. It was reported earlier this year that EU migration to the UK from 2012 to 2020 was underestimated by a whopping 1.6 million.

Surely that is a good thing then? This could be the one to give mass herd immunity, right across the globe and especially in countries where vaccination levels are low such as SA.

The measure of 'cases' also very loosey-goosey mind you as that refers to a positive LFT and/or PCR test with the latter being the more reliable of the two. It has already been shown that juice can give a positive LFT result and that is before we get to those folks who faked a positive result to get a couple of weeks off work. How someone can be a case (or why they even got tested in the first place!) without symptoms is beyond me.

I get the feeling that even if covid was wiped from the planet over the next 12 months, unlikely I know, we would still be going through the same process next year.
Flu will be reported in a similar manner if nothing new comes along.

Hospitals have always been overwhelmed in the winter.

I have found out that less than half the labs in the UK are able to detect Omicron and those that can take around 5 days to do the DNA sequencing. No one is being told which variant they have contracted, so if someone says they have Omicron take it with a big pinch of salt.

Around us lots of school kids are testing positive without showing symptoms, it is just the regular LTF tests picking it up. Let's not hit the panic button just yet.

At least one person in the UK has died with the Omicron coronavirus variant, the prime minister has said.

I'm sorry Boris - change 'with' to 'from' and I might take a bit more notice. You do know that by next week Omicron will be the dominant variant in the UK?

Boris said "the idea that this is somehow a milder version of the virus, I think that's something we need to set on one side."

Omicron is a milder version - just look at what's happening in Countries where Omicron is dominant. I think you are wrong Mr. Johnson - which seems par for the course.

@clanless I couldn't agree more - the wording is everything here as is perspective. It is sad when someone dies, of course it is, but death is all around us every day. Sadly, people do catch viruses, get ill, get hit by lorries... it is all part of life.

Lots of people during this pandemic have been admitted to hospital for various life threatening problems only to pick up covid while there, if they should unfortunately die they then become a covid statistic.

I seem to remember Norovirus being mentioned most winters as being rife in hospitals, but I cant remember any statistics stating how many people have died "with" Norovirus.

Our local hospital has just reported "we are seeing more people in our hospitals with COVID-19. In addition, it is also that time of year when Norovirus (diarrhoea and vomiting or D&V) is circulating and we currently have a number of outbreaks locally, including in our hospital"
