NHS consultants have their team and who ever you end up being treated by varies I've found, I usually end up with the apprentice.

I'm assuming privately you get treated by the boss?:dunno:

Like Pete over the years I've seen all ranks, often starting with the consultant for diagonosis, discussion of options and way forward, then the treatment being done by the registrars before being passed down to the houseman for follow up and discharge.
It's quite fun when you know more about your condition and treatment than the junior doctor you end up with.

In Thanet we are the dumping ground for the boat people who cross the channel.
In the last 6 months or so, the number of locals getting assaulted and cars broken into has gone up. Now I wonder why:scratch:

This is true John, although you are not allowed to make the connection these days without being called that nasty R word.
The main media always focus on the mother's and children, but they are outnumbered by lone single young men, who having come from war torn areas are used to just taking what they want.
It's not a good situation for both sides.
I do wonder though how they can live in a cardboard city for weeks at the French coast and then when they get here complain that the accommodation that they have been given is not good enough.

I have to admit, in all cases of surgery I have only been seen by my Surgeon for followups, both in and out of hospital. Don't think I would fancy being seen by someone else. However, on one occasion I was in the SNS//NHS hospital for nine days (three of which I was in traction) and I only recall nurses coming and no doctors (except for the occasions when the convoy came in the morning) so I had T'other Half transfer me to the private hospital. I spent a further 13 days there (complications including contracting MRSA from the SNS/NHS hospital) but I only ever saw the one Doctor/Surgeon daily.

No idea, but it does certainly slow things down massively.

One factor that is bound to have an impact on medical staff numbers is Brexit. It has been very common for newly graduated European nurses and doctors to spend a year or two working in the UK, in the EU days their degrees were immediately recognised and thanks to most being fluent in English, this was an easy option. In Finland graduating nurses were even recruited from Uni to work in the UK.

In the same way, UK, or specifically Scotland, has been a popular place to do post-grad medical studies or an exchange year.

Nowadays these are bound to be more difficult. I'm also not sure if for example a nurse's salary is over the Brexit minimum salary threshold.

Hopefully the situation will return better as it is certainly beneficial for both- we'll see after Covid eases up and young people start to look again for options to work and study abroad.

Brexit will indeed have had an effect and of all sectors healthcare is almost certainly one of the worst hit. There needs to be something of a reset in terms of healthcare workers wages though to be fair - when I was a youngster being a nurse or a teacher was one of those "they've done well" sort of jobs with decent money. Over the years that has been significantly depressed by cheap labour (as have many other sectors) so time has come to reset that I think.

There seems to be no shortage of people in the UK - there is a shortage of those willing and able to work however.

Yes it will. Those now wanting to come from the EU to work will have the same hurdles that non EU and EEA citizens have endured.

Non EU and EEA have been allowed to come to the UK for work, however the rules are considerably different, especially financially. For a non EU nurse working in the UK wishing to stay and settle in the UK, then after 5 years you must apply for ILR, residency. One of the requirements for a nurse which comes under the tier 2 requirements is, you must have a salary of £35,000, this was introduced the same day as the IHS. As with the IHS going up, so did the salary requirements. In 2018 a non EU nurse would have to earn £35,500 in 2019 it went up to £35,800 and in 2020 it went up to £36,200, if your not earning that salary, your not getting residency. I don't know what the average salary is for a nurse, but one thing is for sure, these new rules made it came across that they were not appreciated.

Has happened here as well. Some of them have been housed on the industrial estate with no public transport and 2 or 3 miles from the town centre!
