An abundance of caution - or - a waste of precious NHS resources?

Covid: Nightingale surge hubs to be set up in eight hospitals, NHS England says

Talk here in Wales about closing down schools again.

Factoid - 80% of people reported as in hospital with Covid are there for other reasons - eg. a broken leg.

It's time to fling the doors open.

Let's face it no one knows if it has worked or not. My feeling is if we didn't do anything then the pandemic would have been much worse. The only thing that does work without question is lockdown and to a lesser extent mass vaccination.

I personally don't mind wearing a mask which is the only real restriction at the moment when shopping etc. Apart from that what is stopping us getting on with our lives?

When will we know if its worked?;)

Hope I'm wrong, but I foresee more restrictions coming along soon.

What we seem to be doing is actually prolonging the pandemic.

Bear in mind, this is all about protecting the NHS, not the public, as such.

Although they keep quoting infections it is the amount of hospitalisations that govern what restrictions take place.

We have a new restriction which I think is unique ...

I believe @clanless has something there. This is from one of our reliable news outlets today:

"It’s a phenomenon doctors and officials have known about for months, but haven’t been all that forthcoming about.

It’s what’s known as incidental hospitalizations — people who are included in the Ontario government’s daily count of people in hospital with COVID-19, but who aren’t actually in hospital for the virus.

Instead, they’ve gone to hospital for something completely different and just happen to test positive for the virus upon arrival but aren’t at all suffering from it.

Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown is now looking to draw attention to this under-reported issue, which is only getting bigger. “I’ve been told it’s about 50% of cases,” Brown said in a phone interview with the Sun , referring specifically to Brampton hospitals.

This means the actual number of people in hospital with COVID-19 throughout Ontario may be half of what the official numbers indicate."

Manipulate the numbers and you can manipulate the people?

                      and another factor...

"One other challenge, according to Rau, is that the sensitivity of PCR tests is such that they can pick up very old positives that are basically meaningless."

“You’re picking up people who are positive with a historic infection,” Rau explained.

This testing thing doesn't really make that much difference when it comes to Omicron. Half of those who have Omicron will brush it off as the sniffles - which they get over in a couple of days.

If I was a cynical old bluffer - I'd be thinking that people are taking the tests for a couple of days off work - if I was a cynical old bluffer that is.

I wonder how many do report them as positive even when they are in fact not. This self-reporting business is deeply worrying to be honest - what next DIY breath tests to declare ourselves fit to drive on a Saturday night?

Not sure even the mask wearing etc works. I am literally just coming out of the really nasty middle bit of a dose of flu - as doses of flu go, it has been relatively mild (punched by a boxer wearing a glove, rather than bare knuckle..) but I still got that despite folks wearing masks and me being a virtual recluse for the past two years and getting my flu jab.. it still got me.

Maybe with your lowered resistance to things the flu jab may have had that effect on you. A totally non-medical comment. :dunno:
